Sun's rays were fading at the horizon. The Atlawas were already inside their houses, and Spyro and Cynder were heading to the exit of the village, closely followed by Traku, the Atlawa elder.
"I hope that our help is enough to help you get back to Warfang." Said Traku to both dragons. "Are you sure you don't want to stay for the night?"
"Thank you, Traku." Spyro said. "But we want to go back as soon as possible." Even when they talked through the argument from the morning, Spyro couldn't fully trust the Atlawas. What if they tried something in the middle of the night? He couldn't risk that. But Spyro would never admit that these were his real concerns.
"And again..." Said Cynder, bowing her head. "I'm really sorry for what I did when I was under Malefor's control." During the day, things calmed down a little, but some Atlawas still watched Cynder with fear. Spyro understood these people, but it still made him a little mad.
"Of course." Said Traku "I hope we can look forward to a peaceful time between dragons and Atlawas."
After saying goodbye, both dragons jumped to fly away.
Hours passed, and the moon was shining beautifully. Cynder and Spyro stopped at a riverbank. While Spyro drank water, Cynder wouldn't take her gaze from the stars. When Spyro looked at her, he started to smile. She's beautiful. It was nights like this one that Spyro wanted to stay next to her for the rest of his life.
"I'm tired." Said Cynder. She looked calmly at Spyro's eyes, reflecting many things that Spyro couldn't fully understand. "I'll go to sleep."
"Sure. I'll join you in a minute." He watched how the dragoness walked through the bushes, leaving him alone with his thoughts. Even when they succeeded against Malefor, Spyro felt that he would never be able to tell Cynder how he felt. What if she doesn't feel the same way? He's fought against apes, giant insects, golems, other dragons, but somehow, the idea of telling Cynder his feelings, was terrifying.
When Spyro joined back Cynder, he lay down two meters away from her. She was already breathing slowly, and Spyro understood that she was already sleeping. He rested his head on the soft grass and couldn't take his eyes away from her. Watching her sleep gave him a peaceful feeling that went from his tail to his head. I have to tell her. If he wanted to stay with Cynder, he had to listen to his heart and tell her the love he felt for her.
The next morning, they were already flying again. Ahead of them, they could see a massive pine forest. Close to Warfang was a pine forest like this one, and Spyro knew they were getting closer.
"I think Traku's help was good." Said Cynder while flying next to Spyro. She was clearly happy, smiling the whole time. It was very contagious, because Spyro was smiling too.
"He said that this could be Warfang's pine forest. This must be the way." A little of seriousness take over Spyro's mind. He focused his gaze on the horizon, hoping to see Warfang's massive walls. Cynder saw him a little irritated, so she flew right up of him. Spyro looked at her, confused by this. Suddenly, Cynder stopped flying, and drop herself on top of Spyro. He was clearly taken by surprise, because Spyro started to fall to the forest. Cynder regained height, and laughed at Spyro while he was trying to control his flight. When he finally stabilized himself, he flew right next to her, indignant.
"What was that for?" Asked Spyro.
"You have to cheer up, purple boy!" Said Cynder while flying bellow Spyro and rolling in the middle of the air. "We're going back home, and we're together. And if the Atlawas survived pretty well to the massive reconstruction of the world, then I say that we must have faith about Warfang being alright."
Spyro didn't know if he could share her optimism, but she surely made him feel better.
"Then how about a race?" Said Spyro, with a very confident look on his face. Cynder smiled with her own confidence, clearly happy to play along.
"You're on!" Right in that moment, both dragons started to fly faster, making pirouettes, flying in front of the other, and doing everything to get ahead of the other. They were having fun, and Spyro enjoyed that he could still do these kinds of games with Cynder. He knew that everything would be fine, he had to believe in that. And Cynder was with him, ready to support him if things didn't go as he hoped.
At midday, they were flying in silence. They were clearly getting tired but didn't say anything. And finally, Spyro saw something. A massive wall was right in front of them.
"We're here!" Shouted Cynder.
"Yes! We did it!" Both dragons started to fly faster. They did it, they found Warfang at last. Spyro knew that he would've never been able to do this without Cynder. It was thanks to her that he never lost faith and never succumbed to his fears.
As soon as they got closer, they saw the first glimpses of many dragons flying everywhere. But not everything was good. Parts of the walls were cracked open, and some debris were falling to the ground. Both young dragons could see that many dragons were flying because were trying to fix or make a little safer some parts of the walls. Some moles could be seen helping too. When they crossed the walls, they finally saw the consequences of Malefor's doing. Many buildings were destroyed, there could be seen smoke columns all around the city, and all the dragons and moles Spyro could see were busy doing their best to control the disaster. Spyro was looking at this, with very sad eyes. Cynder flew in front of him, and Spyro looked at her beautiful eyes. She smiled calmly, trying to give him silent reassurance. Spyro felt much better just by seeing her. Now it was time to go searching for their friends.
