~ THE NOT-SO-GREAT OUTDOORS PT.2 ~
SHE EXPECTED SOMETHING like this was going to come up eventually, but right out the gate? She hoped maybe she'd get some time to settle in before being asked to do things she'd really, really rather not do.
Her breath catches behind her teeth when she braves a glance over the steep drop, her hands already clammy with trepidation, and her skin already beginning to prickle and burn at the nape of her neck. She's not worried about the jump, the distance from point A to point B doesn't faze her at all. It's what's there to catch them at point B that's sinking stones in her stomach.
The water. Deep water that's undulating at the mountain's base, licking up the slick cliff face of jagged stone and sending plumes of mist into the air. She averts her eyes to save herself from sinking further into the tight grip that panic's already wrapped around her lungs. Sebastian's eyes are already on her when she looks his way.
"Okay," Chris McLean calls. "Today's challenge is three-fold. Your first task is to jump off this one-thousand-foot-high cliff into the lake."
"Piece of cake," Bridgette hums by the edge, her air unbothered. June swallows thickly with envy as she shuffles towards her brother.
"If you look down," Chris continues, "you'll see two target areas. The wider area represents the part of the lake we've stocked with psychotic, man-eating sharks. Inside that area is the safe zone. That's your target area, which, we're pretty sure is shark-free.
"For each member of your team that jumps and actually survives, there will be a crate of supplies that you'll need for the second part of the challenge. Building a hot tub. The team with the best one gets to have a wicked hot tub party tonight. The losers will be sending someone home." Sebastian places a comforting hand on June's shoulder when she finally reaches him on the outskirts of her team. "Let's see... Killer Bass, you're up first."
"You gonna be alright?" Seb quietly whispers to his worrying sister, her eyes dark with fear. "You don't have to do it, 'member? If it's too much, let 'em know."
"Yeah... I dunno," she breathes in reply, wrapping her arms around her middle to ward off the goosebumps building along her sides. "Jury's still out... I don't wanna chance gettin' booted for not jumping."
"You're probably one of their stronger players, Jay. They'd be stupid to boot'cha."
It's quite clear that none of the Killer Bass look very eager to step up and take the plunge first, each of them eyeing the others in hopes someone will volunteer. Bridgette's the most likely to offer herself up, June thinks. She seems unnervingly unnerved.
"So, who wants to go first?" said Bass spins to ask the others after peaking over the drop.
"I'd rather not do it at all," June mumbles to herself. Her voice catches DJ's attention, the man shuddering like a leaf mid-autumn at the idea of jumping alone. He catches her eye and nods his agreement to her statement.
