✿ Aileen's POV
“Florida, Papi. Florida.”
“Itʼs good. You need a break.”
I make a face.
“I do not.”
“Yes, you do.”
“No, she doesnʼt” Bonita joins us on my balcony.
I smile.
“We barely see her these days. We donʼt want her three thousand miles away from home.”
My smile drops.
“Youʼre laying it on a little too thick honey, donʼt you think?” Papi smiles.
“No, Hank. Iʼm not. I donʼt want our daughter forty hours away from home in a different time zone.”
“How did you survive with me in school again?” I ask.
“That was school. This is... not school” she settles to say.
“Bonnie.”
“Canʼt you get out of it?”
“No Bon. You don't get out of something like this.”
“Really? Because you could just tell them—”
“Bonita” Papi stops her, “Thatʼs enough. Let it go.”
“But—”
“Let it go, Bonita” get repeats then looks at me, “One trip to Florida isnʼt going to stop her from being our daughter.”
I give him a small smile.
“Unless you donʼt wanna go. Then weʼre going to be having a very conversation.”
I chuckle and shake my head.
“Itʼs not that Papi. Iʼm just... nervous.”
“To meet your fiancéʼs grandmother? Itʼs completely normal, Lee. I couldnʼt hold anything down the day before meeting Bonʼs folks.”
That gets Bonita to laugh and she nods.
“True. He was a mess” She smiles and kisses my uncleʼs cheeks.
I sigh.
“I get that Papi but this is different.”
Very.
“Whyʼs that?” my uncle folds his arms.
“Portia Dalton herself is terrified of Reidʼs grandmother. And she insisted on meeting me. That should say a lot, shouldnʼt it?”
“Well, maybe Reidʼs grandmother knows the kind of woman Portia is?” Bonita says, “Just saying” she adds as we look at her.
I sigh.
“Look Lee, youʼve got nothing to worry about.”
“And how do you know that, Bon?” I ask.
She shakes her head.
“I donʼt.”
Very comforting.
“I just know. If you say she and Portia donʼt get along, then sheʼs going to absolutely adore you, Lee.”
Yeah just to piss her daughter-in-law off.
And when weʼre alone, sheʼs going to pay me to leave her grandson alone or else send hitmen after my family.I close my eyes and sigh.
“No sé (I donʼt know)” I rub the back of my neck, “I just feel like...”
