✿ Aileen's POV

“Promise youʼll send us a bunch of pictures, okay?”

I chuckle.

“Yes Bon, I promise.”

“Good. Oh God, I wish I could be there.”

“I wish you all could be here, Bon. Howʼs Cami? I miss her.”

“She sleeps in your room every night so she misses you even more. And sheʼs gonna be bummed when she comes back from school and I tell her you called.”

I smile.

“Well, you can tell her Iʼve got her a lot of presents, and Reid and I cannot wait to see her.”

“Which is when?”

“Soon. As much as I love this place, I canʼt wait to get back home and back to work.”

“Yeah, and thatʼs why you call the bakery every other day?”

I groan.

“I donʼt know why I was expecting Jaime to be quiet about that.”

“Lee, honey, youʼre on vacation. Work should be out of the equation.”

“But Bon—”

“Weʼve got everything under control here. And you? Are you holding down the fort okay? Tell me, do they treat you well?”

I nod as if she can see me.

“Yeah. His aunt and uncle are really nice. And his grandmother is wonderful. You could say she likes me more than her own daughter-in-law.”

Bonita makes a throaty sound.

“Yeah, and I wonder why.”

I giggle.

“You know, sheʼs not completely—”

“Oh no,” Bonita cuts me off, “Donʼt you dare make excuses for that woman. She is irredeemable.”

“Bon.”

“What? You know itʼs true. And you better not sit me next to her at the wedding.”

My brows shoot up.

“What wedding, Bonnie?”

“Oh please, Lee. Youʼve already had two engagement parties. Do you really think the actual wedding is far behind?”

“Yes, Bon. We havenʼt had that conversation. At all.”

“Yeah, right,” she says flatly.

“No, Iʼm serious Bon. No oneʼs getting married—”

“Anytime soon... yeah yeah, we hear it all the time. But you will. And very soon.”

I frown a little at her words and touch my forehead. “Did he say something to you, Bon?”

Bonita chuckles.

“He doesnʼt need to say anything to us about—” She stops talking and I hear the faint sound of Papi’s voice in the background. “It’s what? Oh no. Lee honey, I’m sorry, I have to go. The toilet in the bathroom downstairs we just finished renovating is flooding.”

“That’s not good. And why are you renovating the house?”

“Oh you know...” she drags, “Hang on, Hank, I’ll be right there. Oh God, I can smell it from down here. I have to go, sweetheart. Love you.”
