Chapter VIII

A way out

Yaena

The daylight came through the window, waking me from my drowsiness. I opened my eyes with difficulty and took the time to observe the surroundings. Belcon had not yet returned, which gave me some time to prepare for what was to come.

I would only get one chance. Failure was not an option. The documents he had drawn from our various experiments were in a pile on his desk, next to the screen. Everything was perfectly in place. The plan the creature had hatched would soon bear fruit. All I had to do was wait for Belcon to return, which was only a matter of time.

He entered the laboratory with a cup of coffee in hand. He always had the same smile on his face when entering the room.

"Good morning, my dear. I hope you had a good night's rest. Now we can get down to business."

He took a sip of coffee and placed his cup on the desk, right next to his documents. He began to loosen my straps, and as he untied my hand, I fell forward. He barely caught me before I hit the floor, taken aback by my acting.

"Well, what's the matter with you, little Yae?" he began, helping me to my feet. "Don't tell me that..."

He interrupted his sentence and looked at me with an expression of terror. Everything went exactly as planned. My diversion had been perfect.

I had taken advantage of this distraction to pull a blade from my boot. It had sunk into his hip without difficulty, before moving up his side, tearing the muscles. When he started to scream, a simple knee strike was enough to take his breath away and shut him up.

I took great pleasure in spinning the blade in his wounds. It slid over the bones of the rib cage and came out with a sharp blow. I finally thrusted it again, above his collarbone. It drew a perfect arc across his throat and splashed a few drops of blood in my face. Belcon fell to the ground in a pool of blood, without a sound. He was dead on the spot.

I got rid of the crime weapon before cleaning my face. Everything had happened exactly as predicted by the voice. I then went to the nearest window. With a quick movement, I opened it without a squeak.

It overlooked the gardens. Luckily, a hedge hid the path. After making sure that there was no one around, I climbed out as best I could. With a jump, I reached the white gravel under the cover of shrubs. I finally reached the gate. I pulled myself up skillfully to the top, before falling back down on the other side, with both feet.

I could now set out to find the house described by the creature. Wandering between the villas, it was unlikely that chance would lead me straight to my goal. It was then that I noticed a cherry tree, more imposing than the others. Looking around, I saw a roof slightly different from the others. I suddenly had the feeling that I was in front of what I was looking for. It was a small house, with the top of the roof sticking out in front.

Slowly, I put my hand on the handle and turned it. The door creaked open and I rushed in, making sure to close it behind me. I then began to check the rest of the creature's words. On my left, a door seemed to block the access to the basement. When I tried to turn the mechanism, it did not move an inch.

Opposite it was a piece of furniture. A tinted window prevented me from seeing what was inside, and it seemed to be locked with a small chain. Having no other choice, I set out to break the glass. One of my abilities proved particularly useful in this endeavor. I could cover the skin of my forearms with scales, which would prevent me from cutting myself while breaking the glass.

The glass shattered, revealing a box on the other side. I was able to pick it up and put it on the cabinet to open it. Several valuable objects were inside, including an ornate key. I turned it between my fingers. The pattern matched the lock on the door.
