Chapter XV
An amazing humanShe was swaying back in her chair, her hair tied in a ponytail. When her gaze fell on me, she hiccupped in surprise and nearly fell over. Finn grabbed a small device from the dashboard, connected by a wire.
"Are our guests comfortable on board?"
I was startled to hear a voice answer him, echoing off the walls of the room.
"Affirmative, Commander. They have been docile, as you predicted. The female you captured appears to be important to them."
"Excellent. Let me know if there is any change. Over and out."
There was a click, ending the communication. With the device back in place, Finn ordered me into the second seat. Before I knew what he had in mind, he had slipped a handcuff around my wrist. He hung the other one on the chair and held the key in plain sight between his fingers.
"It's just a little precaution, he explained. Well, Fenna, we're leaving! I leave you to take care of the rest."
"I... Well received, commander!" she stammered, blushing at the evocation of her name.
She sat back in her chair and gave a few orders through her radio, speaking directly to the operators.
"Relax." Finn advised me. "You shouldn't tense up like that, there's nothing scary about it. It might be a little jarring at first, but you'll get used to it soon, don't worry."
Fenna pushed a lever and the train suddenly activated. At first it moved slowly, then faster and faster. The tracks were made of rails, whose gauge caused the regular shaking. The process seemed ingenious to me. It allowed the railroad to adapt to temperatures without the deformations affecting the condition of the track.
"You are very quiet, Fenna." said Finn while putting his hand on her shoulder. "Is it our guest who makes you this effect?"
"What do you speak about? As if the sight of a Hybrid was enough to make me lose my means..."
She panicked as she realized what words had just come out of her mouth.
"Don't get it wrong." he said to me. "She doesn't hate you, quite the contrary. This young girl is a great lover of the half-humans. So much so that not a day goes by without her talking to me about them. She dreams of..."
"Commander!" she exclaimed, offended.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry... But I'm amused by your attitude. You have a golden opportunity, take advantage of it. You can ask her anything you want."
Her face lit up with wonder and she coughed to hide her excitement.
"Really? Then I have a request, Commander."
"I'm listening."
"I would like you to leave me with her, alone."
There was a pause after her tirade. Finn stared at her for a moment, wondering if she was serious or not. I also found her request surprising. Never before had a human deigned to stay in the presence of a Hybrid of his own free will. It was all the more surprising coming from a young human.
"Excuse me?"
"I want you to leave us some space" she repeated in a voice that left no room for doubt.
"I refuse. Haven't you been listening to anything? She is our captive, and I can't afford to leave her unattended. I don't know what you're thinking, but I can assure you this is a bad idea. Hybrids are not to be taken lightly, Fenna."
