Chapter 4

The box contained....

A picture of a man and my mother smiling and holding hands, a letter, and a ziplock baggy with cash in it.

Pulling the picture and letter out, I carefully examined it. I know for sure it's not Dan so it has to be my real father. I set the photo to the side and pick up the letter.
Opening it my eyes began to water and my chest tighten.
My mother wrote it...

Skyler,

I knew something would happen eventually causing you to leave. I don't know what but something. I've been saving this money up for years since you were 13. I want you to use that money to take care of Lane and yourself until you find that man in the photo.
I know you're wondering, who is that man? If you haven't found out yet but he is your real father. You are a smart girl. I know you will do whats right for you two until you find him. I want you to find him. but no matter what forgive him for leaving. We were young and dumb at the time.
Just forgive him...

I clenched my eyes shut holding the tears back and trying to keep the sobs in the back of my throat down. She knew something this bad would happen that would cause us to leave.
Why didn't she tell us?
If she knew why did we risk coming back again?
Why is it so hard to live a normal life?

All of these questions and many more swarmed around my head creating me a headache.
I folded the letter back and put it back in the box with the picture. I grabbed the ziplock baggy and opened pulling out the money that was inside.
I sat there counting it over and over again just to make sure I was correct with the amount.
The baggy held $4,891 in it. She's been saving this money for years just to waste it on us because of that fucker Dan.

I hope the police got him. If not I will and I will go down trying..
