chapter one
→ just trust me
Audria Newman, sleeping soundly in her bed under a pile of blankets, woke to the sound of a soft knocking on her window. She immediately bolted upright in bed, blinking slowly with sleep in her eyes. Adrenaline shot through her as the knocks continued, followed by a dull whisper of her name. She froze at the unidentifiable voice.
"Audi!"
At the first harsh whisper of the girl's nickname, Stiles had gotten no response. He'd been knocking for maybe a minute already, waiting for her to answer, but if he waited any longer he was going to break in, drag her out of bed, and force her to come with, awake or not.
He said her name louder, knocked a little harder. When he was met with unmoving gray curtains, he huffed in frustration, breath fogging up the glass. He pulled out his phone and texted her, the thirteenth one he'd sent since he'd overheard his father's dispatch call seven minutes earlier.
On her bedside table, Audi's phone lit up with a notification. The too-bright screen was filled with text messages from one person. Squinting and holding the phone as far away as she could to still be able to read it, she looked at the one sent seconds ago.

OPEN THIS DAMN WINDOW RN or else

Audi glanced at the window, eyes straining to see Stiles's faint silhouette through her curtains. When she confirmed to herself that it really was him, she laughed softly and texted him back.

She felt first a sense of surprise and then urgency at his text. Without any more teasing, she slid her glasses on and hopped out of bed. The cool air from the air conditioner hit her bare arms and legs, making her shiver and grab a random hoodie lying on the ground. She pulled it on without thinking then pushed the curtains aside, prepared to open the window, but the sight outside stopped her.
On the other side of the glass, Stiles was turned away and facing the street. His thumb tapped relentlessly on his phone, held up near his face as if preparing to make a call or checking the time. He nodded, confirming something to himself, before turning back to the window to see Audi with her face pressed up against the window, eyes wide and staring right at him.
Stiles let out a yelp and jumped, almost throwing his phone.
Audi slid the window open and covered her mouth with her hand. Her shoulders shook with silent laughter, keeping quiet so as not to alert the rest of the house. "What's up, loser?" she whispered and tried not to laugh even more at the betrayed look on his face.
He stared at her for a second in disbelief then whispered back, "You suck. Look, I'll explain later, but you gotta come with me."
"Excuse me, with that vague answer? Hell no." Audi glanced at the time on her phone. "It's nearly midnight, can't it wait?"
"Nope, just trust me," As he spoke, he was already turning around and getting ready to head back to his Jeep. She gaped at his blind faith in her, that she'd follow, even though she knew he was right.
