chapter three

→ i can't wait to play scrabble

The final bell rang, signaling that the first day of their second semester of sophomore year was already over.

Audi bolted up from her chair in Geometry, her heart skipping in her chest. She'd forgotten about the dead body in the woods, and the only thing she cared about now was lacrosse practice and Allison. Her excitement didn't stop nerves from brewing in her stomach but she forced them aside.

Scott and Stiles followed her out of the classroom, less ambitious and just glad to be done with school. Upon noticing their lack of excitement, Audi slowed and forced herself to calm down.

They split up eventually, making their way to their separate lockers. Audi was in the process of shoving her books inside her locker when she noticed Allison opening one a few down to her right.

Audi called out to her, and when Allison turned to her, the two cousins wasted no time in picking up their conversation from where they'd previously left it in first period.

Standing in front of her own locker, Allison asked, "You know how my family's always moving everywhere, right?"

Audi nodded enthusiastically, shoving a book into her locker, as Allison continued, "I guess we just decided to move to Beacon Hills this time."

"Well, I'm glad you did. It's been so long since I've seen you. You look so different," Audi commented, noticing the way her cousin had grown from when they were awkward pre-teens. Audi was glad to see her again since the last time had been when they were maybe twelve.

"Me? What about you?" Allison said, gesturing vaguely at Audi's figure.

Over the years, due to her grueling efforts toward lacrosse, Audi had turned from gangly into muscular. Most of it was due to the many hours spent running back and forth doing drills, but the other part was Beau. He'd told her once how she didn't look like she played lacrosse- she was too weak, too girly. Audi had taken that and shoved it back at him by developing muscles bigger than his own.

"Yeah, I guess I'm kinda jacked, now," Audi said, laughing slightly.

Allison beamed. "I don't know how I forgot you'd be here. I guess I was just worried about the move and everything."

"No worries. You remember now, right?" Audi asked, smiling cheekily.

"Definitely. It'll be nice having someone I know here," Allison said across the lockers between them.

"I bet," Audi said behind her locker door. She pulled her head out, prepared to speak directly to her cousin, but what she saw made her stop.

Allison's gaze was fixed a little further down the hallway to Audi's right. Audi followed it, unsurprised to see Scott standing at his locker with a dopey look on his face.

Smiling wickedly to herself, she waved her hands to catch his attention, and when he turned, it didn't escape her that he had to practically tear himself away from Allison's wide smile. Hidden behind the locker and with Scott's eyes on her, Audi pointed deliberately at him then at Allison and mashed her hands together like they were kissing. She made a vulgar face at him and he panicked, throwing his hands up.

Stop it, he mouthed, but she just laughed silently and turned away from him.

Audi closed her locker and then froze in shock at seeing Allison standing and talking with a familiar redhead. She hadn't expected Lydia to swoop in on Allison so quickly, her sharp talons apparently primed and ready.
