chapter two

Audi's day began with a crude awakening from her alarm, followed by another one from her step-brother, Beau.

Trying not to fall asleep a third time, she sat on the edge of her bed and pulled on her lucky pair of socks while staring blankly at a spot on the floor. Since waking up, she'd already popped in her contacts, gotten dressed, and brushed her teeth but, unfortunately, sleep still refused to let go of its hold on her. The few hours she'd gotten after Stiles dropped her off earlier this morning weren't enough.

A knock on her door drew her attention away from the white and pink-striped sock hanging loosely off the edge of one foot.

"Yeah?" she asked.

A blinding white smile and perfectly curled red hair peeked around the opening door. "You ready to go back?" asked her step-mom, Elizabeth Barton-Newman. She looked too chipper this morning, but Audi was used to it.

Her dad's new wife and her son had been a part of their household for a few years now. Audi may have resented her step-mom at first for not being her mom, but she eventually got over herself. Elizabeth, or Liz they called her, was nice and nowhere near an evil stepmother while Beau, two years older than Audi, was a typical older brother that annoyed her but didn't take shit from anyone else.

Audi smiled, putting her feet on the floor and standing. "Not at all."

The older woman rolled her eyes. "That's the spirit. Your brother and I are, though, and we want to leave sooner than later, so keep that in mind as you drag your feet."

She didn't wait for a response before leaving and closing the door behind her.

Audi didn't bother calling after her, she just sighed and grabbed her worn backpack and lacrosse bag from the floor. Thankfully, she'd had the forethought to pack both last night before she'd gone to bed the first time. She also grabbed Stiles's sweatshirt and shoved it in with her lacrosse things to give to him later.

Audi headed downstairs to swipe a piece of toast off her dad's plate since she knew he wasn't around to finish it. As Beacon Hills Memorial Hospital's medical examiner, Eugene Newman was probably already at the hospital looking at one-half of a dead body. Unfortunately, that meant working with the sheriff's department, and that meant Stiles's dad was going to tell him about their appearance in the woods last night.

Audi shoved the toast in her mouth at the thought then put the plate in the sink to be washed later.

A horn honked outside, and she muttered under her breath. Already thinking of an excuse for her dad, she made for the front door then circled back when she realized she'd forgotten to put on shoes. Forgoing their actual purpose, she grabbed her worn tennis shoes and burst through the front door.

When she got in the car, Liz wasted no time in backing down the driveway. Beau drummed his hands on the dashboard in beat with the song playing on the radio while Audi shoved her feet in her shoes.

It was a fifteen-minute trip to Beacon Hills High School, one that was filled with chatter about Beau's graduation in May and how easy his classes were going to be this semester. Audi stayed mainly out of the conversation, thinking instead of the upcoming lacrosse season. Their first practice was today, and she was simultaneously excited and nervous about it.
