Violet
"Hey, grumpy." I say to Kyle.
Grumpy is his nickname, I've called him that since we were little. He hates it so much, which makes it even better. He audibly groans, almost sounding as if in pain, as he sits at the kitchen table later that night. He grabs his ribs and lays his head on the table.
"You okay, grump?" I ask confusion mixed with concern as I look at him. I've never seen him like this. What isn't he telling me?
"I'm fine. Screw off," He groans and pauses. "I'm sorry, flower, I just don't want to talk about it." He says quietly.
He's called me flower since we were kids. Even though we hate each other...he'll always be my grump and I'll always be his flower.
"Oh shoot." I look at the clock on the oven and see it's nine already. Eli is expecting me to come over today.
"What's wrong?" He asks his coldness taking over again as he looks up at me from the table. His eyes darkening.
"I just realized the time, I'm going to Eli's. Tell Jace I'll be back in a bit." I say and head out the door. He lives pretty close so I walk.
He always leaves a key for me under the place mat so I grab it and walk in. No one seems to be home until I hear sounds of kissing upstairs. Then I hear a voice say Eli's name. A female voice.
I feel sick. Physically, mentally, heart shatteringly sick. My hands shake as I reach for the handle of his door. I open it slowly and my heart sinks deep into my stomach. I wanna throw up.
There's a girl, still fully clothed, on his bed. He's onto of her, shirtless, kissing her. I push the door open fully and his head snaps up as his eyes widen.
"Babe! It's not what it looks like!" Eli says scrambling off the bed. I feel my eyes fill with tears.
"It's exactly what it looks like." I say quietly and run down the stairs. I almost trip on the final step as I head for the door.
"Babe. Violet, let's talk about this. It meant nothing. Let me explain." He says grabbing my arm before I can open the door.
"There's nothing to talk about. You cheated. And we're done." And I'm gone. I don't even remember running out of the door and down the street.
I bust through the front door immediately falling to my knees, cradling against the door. I don't even look to see if anyone is home.
"Violet," A deep voice says, dark and cold, Kyle. I can feel his warm but dark presence looming over me. "Why are you crying? What did he do?"
"Violet! What happened," I then hear Jace. He crouches down in front of me. "Come on, kid, what's goin' on?"
"Eli...Cheat...Me." Is all I can manage to get out through tears. I wanna throw up. My head hurts from crying. I'm tired.
"What?" Jace asks confused. And that's when I hear a loud groan and a punch to the wall causing me to flinch.
"He cheated on her. The idiot cheated on her." Kyle says lowly. I've never heard him so angry. So cold.
"Get her to bed, I'll handle this." Kyle says to Jace. Before he walks out he stops in front of me and looks down.
"Where does he live, flower?" He lifts my chin, his gaze softening and hardens back when he see my tears.
"Fifteen thirty East Rep Street." I say my tears finally coming to a stop as I look into his dark eyes.
"I'll bring you some ice cream. Cookie dough, right?" He says his thumb gently stroking my cheek.
"Yeah." I say almost inaudibly. He knows my favorite ice cream? How does he know my favorite ice cream?
He takes a moment to look over my face, his large hand still on my cheek, when a dangerous and fiery look flares in his eyes. Then he leaves.
Jace carries me to bed, tucks me in, and kisses my head as he's about to leave. "I'm always here little sister. Know that."
I'm having an "I wish I had my mom" moment. I guess having divorced parents is the problem. A dad who's living across the country with his new girlfriend. A mom who works a traveling job all the time. Here we are. Just me, Jace, and Kyle. Did I just include Kyle? The heck.
About an hour later someone busts through my door. I groggily turn my head to see who it is. Who else did I expect? Of course it's Kyle.
He has white bandages wrapped around bloodied hands as he sits next to me. His hand finds my cheek again and trails to stroke my hair.
"Wake up, flower, I brought you some food. You better hurry before Jace eats it all." He says in a soft tone.
Why is he being so soft? He hates me. Why is he being...nice? He puts both hands on my waist to pull me into a sitting position, sliding his sweatshirt over me.
He leads me down stairs and pizza fills my senses. On the table in the living room I see cookie dough ice cream, drinks, and blankets set. My favorite movie is on, too. Never been kissed.
"You guys hate that movie." I say referring to the screen and rubbing my eyes.
"But you love it," Jace says wrapping his arm around my shoulder. "And tonight is all about you."
Kyle is silently getting things ready. He's wearing black sweats with a grey t-shirt, his tattoos out in the open. I see the rose that trails from his wrist and wraps around in intricate patterns to his muscles. On the other arm he has something in another language. I don't know what it is.
"What does that mean?" I ask him and point at the wording on his arm. He looks at me his eyes softening.
"Violet." He says quietly. I tilt my head wondering why he said my name. I don't get it.
"Yeah?" I ask. He looks away avoiding looking at me. He stays quiet for a good while, the silence stretching uncomfortably.
"No. It says Violet. Your name in Latin." He says almost in a whisper. My eyes widen. He has a tattoo of my name in Latin.
"Why? My name why?" I ask. He finally looks at me, his eyes dark, almost completely black. He glances at Jace, whose jaw is dropped, and back at me.
"Because you're you." Is all he says. I leave it at that, I don't even know what to say anymore. What do I say to that? Except why?
