Prompt: It was an impulse buy...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was an impulse buy. I didn't exactly want to buy two large NERF guns, but my mind told me it was a good idea.

I had no idea what to do with these. I could bring them back, but I already took them out of the box, so the store won't take them. I could give them to the children in the apartment across the hall, maybe they would enjoy them...but then again, did I really want NERF darts flying around the complex. I think it would be safer if I kept them.

The question still remains though, what am I going to do with these? I guess I'll shoot it, seems logical, it is a gun.

So I set up some plastic cups on the coffee table across the living room, and get into position.

One by one, I hit the cups off of the table, missing a couple times in the process.

I actually find this enjoyable. Maybe it wasn't such a bad impulse buy.

As I am setting up the cups again for a second round of "I know how bad I am at shooting but I continue to try and knock these empty vessels made for liquids down in order to prove my dominance" when the door to the apartment opens.

In walks my roommate, Sasha. Sasha is a very serious person, and I didn't consider how she would handle my crazy genius impulse purchase.

"You bought two?" She asked, looking as if she was evaluating my life choices.

I pause, trying to formulate what I was going to say.

"Yeah, well, it was an impulse buy. I didn't mean to."

She looks at me for a moment, and I expect her to go into a lecture about saving money and why it is crucial not to rely on my impulses to make purchases. Instead she picks up the second NERF gun and, with a deadpan face, shoots a bullet and hits me in the arm. I stare at my arm in astonishment. I didn't get yelled at or scolded...I got shot. She shot me. I am supposed to be the dominant fun loving companion, not her.

"This means war," I stare directly at her and raise my gun.

She retaliates by shooting me again, pelting me in the leg and ducking for cover behind the couch.

I run towards where she has hidden and begin to empty my cartridge full of foam bullets at her. She does the same and we end up standing behind the couch shooting at each other. We soon run out of ammunition and resort to laying down on the piece of furniture we had fought behind moments ago; laughing and breathing heavy.

Sasha looks over to me and says something I would never have imagined would come out of her mouth.

"I actually enjoyed this impulse buy of yours."

I smile and rely with a simple, "So do I."
