Chapter 5

It was somehow strange. He was sitting here in class and for the first time he was absent not because of his dead father... but because of this boy. His name was Obito Uchiha. The silver-haired man didn't really think much of the Uchihas, but there was something different about the boy. He didn't seem arrogant or egocentric. The black-haired man always had a smile on his face. Especially when he looked at Rin. When his eyes met Kakashi's, he immediately looked away in displeasure. He could tell himself what he wanted, but he was really depressed about it. Kakashi couldn't quite explain it. The boy was nothing special... quite the opposite. He was untalented, scatterbrained and a huge crybaby. To this day he wondered how Obito had managed to pass the entrance exam. They had probably only paid attention to his name instead of his talent. The silver-haired man sighed. People were all the same somehow. You could do whatever you wanted, but as long as your appearance didn't suit them, you had already failed in their eyes. In any case, he secretly envied Rin for being the focus of Obito's eyes... As so often, he just shook his head at the thought. Sometimes he didn't understand himself. Maybe it was for the best...

Kakashi:

It was a long march, as always. They were on their way to one of the many secret hideouts of the Akatsuki. The forest they were walking through smelled musty. The trees had no leaves left. Overall, the forest seemed dead. In all the hours they had been walking, Kakashi had not seen a single forest dweller. He had only encountered numerous black crows. The slippery ground, mainly mud, did not make the walk any easier for the three of them. Again and again, one of the three threatened to slip away. While this sliding back and forth was getting on the silver-haired man's nerves, Hidan cursed over and over again. His masked partner simply remained silent. At least something...

But suddenly they stopped. He had noticed it a little too late and had run into Hidan, who had immediately started shouting at him.
"Don't you have eyes in your head?!"
"I do, but I can't smell you stopping!" he said irritably.
He didn't say anything else.
The silver-haired man sighed inwardly.
//Do I always have to react like this to make him shut up?//

"We're here," said Kakuzu.
Kakashi looked around and raised his eyebrows. A large, dirty lake stretched out before them. It didn't look like there was anything else here.
Was the Akatsuki's secret hideout underground?

Kakuzu took a few steps forward to the lake and made a few hand signs one after the other. Then he put one of his hands on the ground.
The ground shook beneath their feet.
The silver-haired man looked astonished as a cave rose out of the lake. He would never have thought that Akatsuki was so cunning. The leader of the organization must really be cunning...

"Don't look so stupid and run!" Hidan grumbled and pushed him forward.
He took a deep breath and followed Kakuzu, who was already on his way to the cave across the water.

When they arrived, they entered it immediately. There was a tunnel here. It seemed to lead further down.
There were a few torches on the walls that lit up the narrow passage. Kakashi's heart stopped when he heard a dull noise. A rock wall had opened up behind them.
He looked at the two Akatsuki members in confusion, but neither of them seemed to really give him an answer. Only the renewed tremor made him conclude. If this was one of their hiding places... and it's underwater... it was only logical that a rock wall blocked the entrance... otherwise water would get in.

Kakashi sighed. He had been better at this before. He definitely needed a bit of sleep.

Then they reached the bottom.
Kakuzu opened the door in front of them. As soon as it was open, Hidan stormed past his partner.
"Finally, I can get away from you idiots!"
He left, grumbling, disappearing into one of the many corridors.
"This is the common room," said the masked man, pointing to the huge room they were in. A few tables were placed together in the middle. It looked like a huge round table.
"This is where meals and meetings are held," said Kakuzu, looking sideways at the silver-haired man.
He nodded in understanding.

"If you follow the northern corridor, you'll come to the kitchen. Don't eat too much! It's my money, after all! The dormitories are along the southern corridor, our leader's office is in the eastern corridor, and the treatment room for injuries and minor issues is in the western corridor. You should go to the leader and pick up your things first."
Kakashi nodded and tried to keep the information he had just received in mind.

Then Kakuzu disappeared into the same corridor as Hidan.
Kakashi was strangely nervous and followed the eastern corridor. Unlike before, there were some gas lamps here. At the end of the corridor was a wooden door.
He swallowed and knocked.
There was silence. Was no one there?
"Come in!" a sharp-sounding voice suddenly rang out.
He opened the door and tried to keep his composure.
An orange-haired man with countless piercings on his face sat at a desk and scribbled on a pad.
His piercing purple eyes looked at him attentively.
"Kakashi Hatake... copy ninja from Konohagakure. I hear you've gone renegade now?"
"Yes," he answered without hesitation.
"My name is Pain. I'm in charge here. I founded Akatsuki to catch all Bijuus and create a better world.
"A better world?" he asked.
"Yes. In the world we live in today, there is only pain, hatred, lies and no trust. Nothing will ever change unless someone does something about it. It's like a never-ending cycle. For example, you get an order to... kill someone. You do it. Relatives or friends of the victim suffer and hunt down the murderer and kill him. But the relatives or friends of the murderer do the same. So it's a never-ending vicious cycle. We have to intervene!"

Kakashi said nothing. Pain seemed to be convinced of what he was saying. He also agreed with him completely... but he was skeptical about how he was going to counteract it.
"I put a coat and a ring on the table over there for you."
The leader pointed to the table with his hand.
He followed the hand with his eyes and then stood up. He went to the table and put the coat on himself. Then he took the ring and looked at it. On it was a character that Yami meant something like darkness. He put it around his right index finger.
"Now just one more..."
He held out a kunai. The silver-haired man understood immediately and took the weapon.
He took off his headband and looked at it. The symbol of his former village almost laughed at him. There was so much that was connected to this symbol... but the only thing he thought of when he looked at it was the pain and humiliation that the village had brought him for years. Without batting an eyelid, he scratched a deep furrow horizontally across the metal of the headband with the tip of the kunai.
"Now you are a full member of Akatsuki!"

I'll be continuing!! `(^ ▼^)'↑
