Chapter 1 – the accident

The crowd erupted into cheers as the announcer shouted to the crowd.

 "Ladies and gentlemen! Boys and girls!". The microphone bellowed as he looked around the arena and to the live recording camera.

 "Welcome to the finale of the 67th annual Sais karate tournament!" the crowd quickly erupted into whoops and cheers.

"And tonight, we have the first ever girl competing! A huge milestone for this competition!" the crowds erupted into louder screams and yells. 

"So, let's welcome our last two competitors!" he announced turning his body to the left of him as a boy jumped onto the stage.

He had a deep blue Gi with a dragon sewn into the back. "let's cheer for Jamie Howard 3 times winner of Sais karate competition" the crowd cheered his name mostly his mum in the front row who was hollering his name like a foghorn.

"And a huge round of applause for the first ever girl in the competition..." a long pause filled the air as the presenter turned his body to the right, his arm long and pointing. 

"Miss. Scarlet. Lea. Martin!!" the crowd erupted as scarlet jumped onto the stage her black Gi loose on her body.

Scarlet looked around the arena at were her mum and dad were meant to be sat, she sighed to herself as she looked over at their empty seats, they never showed up for anything, her dad barely earned the right to be called a dad, he mostly sat in front of the TV drinking himself into a frenzy while her mum was out in alleys with one of her 20 boyfriends or with her dealer spending scarlets money that she earnt from her small jobs.

The crowd went dead silent as Jamie and scarlet walked up to each other as the referee told them to bow to him then to each other. Jamie had a smug look on his face, but scarlet stood her ground, as the two opponents took two steps back from each other getting into fighting positions.

They each got into positions as the referee said the words fight, the boy struck first going kick scarlet in the sternum but scarlet managed to quickly dodge out of the way. First, she blocked her opponent's middle throw with an outside block.

Then she took grasp of his wrist and pulled vigorously towards her hips, and she lifted her leg and kicked him in the stomach. Then she moved forward to get to the ground and press down on her opponent's elbows. This caused him to spin around and fall to the ground.

The crowd cheered as the ref ruled as a win for scarlet, as he checked on Jamie his sensei called him over and whispered in his ear, the boy looked shocked and shook his head looking over at scarlet, the sensei gave him a stern look and semi pushed him back to the stage.

The boy had a guilty look on his face and closed his eyes as the ref said "fight," scarlet went to take the first punch, but the boy blocked her high punch with an open hand. And quickly twisted her wrist while stepping forward with an attack to her throat.

Scarlet gasped for breath and that's when he placed his moving foot behind her forward foot. And she had moved back as a result of his throat attack, conveniently tripping his strategically placed foot. Then she toppled over...like a folding screen.

But as she tried to brace herself for the fall, she felt her body shiver and a loud sickening crunch, and before she knew it, she let out a scream, the loudest she had ever heard out of her mouth. medics rushed over and she did not dare look down at her leg...

The recording was everywhere, on YouTube Facebook and everywhere else... the news titles all read. "First girl in Sais karate nationals almost crippled." She sighed to herself as she watched the tv from her hospital bed as the doctor prodded her foot and asked if she could wiggle her toes, she never could no mater how hard she tried.

She was told she would never do karate again which earnt chuckles from her dad who expressed happily at the publicity that his family was getting and all the fundraising money that was being raised, not a dime of it going to her or the hospital bills.

Weeks had past as she tried to heal, but she was a restless girl, she always had to do something. Her mother, marline, sat uselessly at her side. Her mother was skin and bones with an unlevel, shoulder length, badly blond bleached hair and tiger printed tank tops and low waisted skinny jeans.

She had dark circles under her eyes and always looked to be in a high or drunk state which she was most of the time.

Scarlet had a sister, lucy, who was 3 years younger than her and the sweetest little angel that ever-set foot on this planet, she had natural thin blond hair that reached shoulder length and always had a smile on her sweet face, scarlet was dreading what she was going through with her parents without her there to protect her.

Her dad, bill, was a drunken fool with a beer belly and only musty white tank tops in his wardrobe, he was bald with a thin grey beard even though he was in his forties. he only ever wore deep blue jeans with dirty grey tank tops and linen sandals showing of his disgusting dirty feet. So, it was not a surprise when one day he burst into scarlets hospital room with a shit eating grin on his face.

"Guess what?" he asked and scarlet and her mother turned their heads from the tv to look at him his beer belly peeking out from under his tank top.

 "I brought and apartment" he exclaimed excitedly waving and envelope in his hand.

"You did what?!" scarlets mother exclaimed standing from her seat next to scarlet and yanking the envelope out of her husband's hand ripping it open.

 "Dad we already have an apartment" scarlet reminded him in case he was drunk.

"I know that smart ass" he snarled "And that's not an apartment that's a hostel" he rolled his eyes as he looked at his wife's expression. 

"Bill, you fucking idiot we can't afford this" she scolded him 

"yes we can marline" he said sternly 

"and it's in Los Angeles that's two states away... and were even is San Fernando valley" marline said with a roll of her eyes handing him back the envelope.

"Well, we got a big donation for this car guy there his names Daniel puso..." he said with a weird look on his face. Scarlets head snapped around instantly 

"wait do you mean Daniel LaRusso?" scarlet asked pushing herself up in her hospital bed.

"Yeah, that's his name... anyway he gave us a donation for $8,000 and said 'karate is a gift hopefully your daughter can relearn, she's a talented girl'" he spoke mockingly, and scarlet had an excited smile on her face like a child who was just offered candy 

"and it was enough to buy a small apartment in this place called reseda" her dad spoke giddy.

 "Bill... I don't know about this..." marline sighed pinching the brim of her nose. 

"well it's not your choice is it.." he growled giving her a stern look, scarlets mother looked at him afraid until she looked at scarlet... 

"we can move when scarlet can walk" she spoke with a shaky breath and bill left the room a smug look on his face.
