chapter 2 - think positive

CHAPTER 2- think positive.

3 months later

Scarlet slowly flung her aching legs over the clean white hospital bed, the kind nurses helping her stand up slowly. She carefully tried to put pressure on her injured limb, but harsh discomfort shot through her leg causing her to whine in pain. She pressed her lips together tightly not to make and noise as she stood on two feet, her cast giving her some support.

"Hurry up" her dad said sternly out in the hallway of the hospital, he was desperate to get out and get on the road and to have a beer also.

"Keep your voice down" her mother gritted between her teeth pulling on Lucy's hand harshly, before noticing a mark on Lucy's flushed cheeks so she licked her thumb and then used it to wipe the dirt off her face, as lucy used her sleeve to wipe away any trace of her mother attempting to clean her up.

Scarlet hoppled over to her family who weren't even paying attention, her father as soon as he saw her turned to walk to the exit of the hospital like he was in the biggest hurry of his life. 

"Come on sweetheart" her mother spoke with a fake smile as scarlet did not even acknowledge her mother's fake kindness.

Her mother sighed and dragged lucy along as they left the hospital as they all walked to their yellow Austin allegro that had a broken bumper and was a murky yellow colour and had an odd tire from when her father was drunk driving at 50mph. The inside of the car was not the best either, the front had crisps packets and cans stashed in the dashboard, and the back windows didn't even roll down.

Lucy pried away from her mums thin fingers and ran to scarlets side of the car opening the door for her big sister. Scarlet threw in her bag and pulled herself into the car, her broken leg throbbing as she adjusted herself in her seat, her sister climbed in next to her as they squished together in the small car.

Their parents opened their car doors, (their dad in the driver's seat) they both slammed their doors shut as scarlets dad turned the key to the ignition three times before the car jump started and began to drive.

The drive started off easy as it could be, her father had not been pulled over yet and wasn't drinking and her mother was just peacefully smoking one of her cigarettes, the smoke filling the car, causing lucy to cough and wheeze her small lungs not used to the smoke yet.

The drive was 17 hours long with no traffic, so they stayed at 2 motels on the way, her father refused to fly on an aeroplane he said it was fake and you never actually go anywhere and that everyone was hallucinating their travels. Everything that they owned fit into the back of their car six boxes in total considering they live motel to motel for years with no money.

One of the motels they stayed at looked like they could have filmed and episode of law and order with the state it was in, but luckily, they were one of the only people actually staying there.

When they arrived in San Fernando valley it was 4pm in the afternoon, lucy was asleep resting her head on scarlets lap and their mum putting out her last cigarette.

They drove around for a good twenty minutes as their dad tried to figure out where they actually lived.

But then they found it, a ground floor apartment, with only nine other apartment type houses. as they got out of the car carrying their boxes on the way they made it to their rundown apartment complex.

Scarlet could not help but notice the 1001 problems that the landlord refused to fix because it was "to expensive". The swimming pool was empty, filled with green, murky water, and the unmistakable scent of weed and cigarettes and alcohol hung in the air, making her crinkle her nose in disgust.

The sound of a couple arguing next door did not help the impression that this place was giving of

"Wow... good idea bill" her mum said sarcastically dropping her box to the floor. "Let's all move to Los Angeles" she said mocking his voice.

 "Shut up about it will you" there dad rolled his eyes.

"Think positive" scarlet muttered to herself as their dad unlocked the door to their new apartment. The door opened with a loud creak as bill flicked on the light revealing the apartment.

The main apartment had 2 bedrooms 1 bathroom and the living kitchen were all in one room. The kitchen had pale yellow tiles on the floor and as the back splash with dirty wooden brown cabinets and a small fridge in the corner.

It came mostly furnished with a torn deep red couch with a tall lampshade and a tv cabinet with two books under its missing leg to keep it level. It also had a box tv that would only have five channels.

There was a small circular wooden table in the middle of the mini kitchen and living room.

Scarlet sighed and her mum placed the box of kitchen stuff on the counter as scarlet hobbled through the house checking out all the remaining rooms.

The bathroom barely had enough room to walk and had mold on the ceiling, the shower Curtin once white was now a yellowish colour and the medicine cabinet mirror had thin irritating cracks running through it.

'Think positive' scarlet kept repeating to herself as she hobbled to where her and her sisters bedroom were meant to be, she peeked into the smaller room and there was a double bed that filled the room wall to wall with only a bit of walk room with an inbuilt wardrobe leaving a small bit of room.

'I guess this is my room' she thought to herself and place her box and bag on the bed as her little sister ran into the room and started jumping on the bed. 

"Careful lucy" scarlet chuckled watching her sisters pigtails fly in the air as she jumped.

"Stop the banging!" their dad yelled form the living room, he had already made himself comfy with a beer in his hand and he tried to turn on the tv.

"Come on lucy bear" scarlet chuckled as lucy jumped of the bed

 "lets have a look around the complex" scarlet told her limping with her cheap cast as she followed lucy around the crumbling estate.
