Amber eyes scanned the room to see who was a potential threat or ally among the other students.
'Too noisy... Slacker... Ugh... How does Mr. McCoy expect us to pick our group without speaking to our classmates?!' A girl scowled as she played with her short reddish brown hair. Her scowl deepened as someone saw it fun to drag their scissors down the metal leg of their desk.
The sound hurt her ears despite the thick material of her hoodie. 'Someone's asking for a rat head in their bag.' She thought bitterly, turning her attention to the other side of the room to watch Rose sign something to Terrance. 'Leave it to her to interact with him... They're the reason why we have this stupid assignment.'
The girl was Lyra Wittamaker, age 16. She was in the exclusive program because her mutation made her a bit of a wildcard. Her parents tried to get her to wear contacts and bought her an assortment of hoodies to hide her features but the contacts hurt and dissolved in hours. She found the hoodies comfortable to the point of wearing them constantly.
Her mutation? She had cat ears and eyes and was able to shift into any sized cat depending on her mood if her emotions got out of control. The professor determined that she was safer at the boarding school and approached her parents with an unexpected scholarship. Her parents jumped at the opportunity and literally signed her over into his care.
'Not like they wanted me anyway...' She thought as she watched Terrance and Rose communicate in silence.
