Author's Note: life is meant to be lived, why not let yourself enjoy a boss baby fanfic?
You were nervous for your first time in daycare. You didn't have any siblings yet, so it was your first time interacting with other babies. Your stomach fluttered at the thought, your breakfast threatening to come up.
Your parents' goodbyes felt much too short and soon you were crawling towards the other babies, tears stinging your eyes. Across a play-mat you saw another baby, green eyes shining with tears. A few babies cooed but you crawled past, towards the other tearful infant. He didn't notice you at first and you sat down, looking at his blonde hair as he cried, facing the window. A breeze outside rustled the tree he was watching and he turned around, jumping when he saw you.
"Hi," you babbled nervously. He waved before wiping the tears from his eyes. "We match."
He cocked his head to the side, his cheeks looking chubbier against the gravity. "What do you mean?"
You giggled. "Our eyes," you explained, though his was a shade lighter. "I'm y/n."
"Crispin," he smiled, "Crispin Biscuits." His face was pink from the tears and you pulled your favorite toy out, holding it between you guys.
You absently heard one of the adults talking, but it didn't matter. Not then. "Here," you held the wooden horse between you two, "this is Carrots. I think he'll comfort you."
Crispin grabbed Carrots with a nervous smile, hugging the horse against his chest. "Oh," he said, happy and sad simultaneously. "I have two new play friends on my first day." His accent was unfamiliar, he didn't babble like the rest of the babies. As you watched him cuddle Carrots, you didn't care about his strange voice anymore. "I had a horsey once."
You scooted closer to him. "Really? Why isn't he here with you right now?"
Crispin laughed and shook his head at you. "A real horsey, y/n."
"So you'll go home and see him?" You smiled without knowing why. There was an emptiness in his eyes the next time he looked at you, one you noticed in other babies after they have nightmares.
"No," Crispin started. He swallowed and dropped Carrots into his lap. "That was at my old home. My horsey let me get hurt during a vault so I had to move here." He nodded at Carrots. "I'll never get to vault with a horse again."
You picked up Carrots, the wood gone soft from where you'd grabbed him countless times. "Well we can use our imagination so you can safely vault with Carrots!"
Crispin went quiet, eventually pushing himself up. He offered you his hand and you took it, clutching Carrots in the other. "Okay, play friend!" Still holding your hand, he pulled you with him until you were both running around the play mat. "Now jump!" He let you go and you did, jumping plainly. Crispin smiled back at you before jumping and spinning in the air.
You clapped, your cheeks burning with joy. "See!" Crispin nodded, jumping once more.
A bell clanged and every baby turned its head to see the daycare door opening, parents spilling into the room. A tap on your shoulder caused you to turn. Crispin took your hands, one still holding Carrots. "Thank you for today, my new play friend."
You beamed at him. "I'll see you tomorrow Crispin!" When your mom picked you up, you babbled in her arms about your new friend and your first day. She smiled and nodded along, kissing your cheek when you were done.
-A couple weeks later-
"Crispin!" You cheered, running towards your best friend. A discarded toy was at your feet and you tripped over it, continuing with a crawl.
"Hey!" Another baby called out and you looked over at Lily, who glared back at you. "You hit my favorite toy!"
"I'm sorry," you said quietly. You'd never spoke to Lily before, hardly anyone but Crispin, and your head was light with this interaction. "I didn't see it there."
"You wouldn't like someone hurting your toy," she barked, snatching the stuffed animal in her arms and waddling away.
Crispin stood in front of you and helped you up. You wrapped your arms around him and felt the nerves of the last conversation dwindle away. You stepped away, smiling nervously at him. "What was that with Lily?"
"I accidentally ran into her toy," you said. Your grip on Carrots tightened. "She scared me a little," you confessed, looking down.
Crispin reached for your hand and pulled you into the corner you always played in. "It's okay play friend!" He did a spinning jump, his smile wide when he landed. You let him hold Carrots, running and jumping with him. You were content to watch today, your brain still buzzing from conflict.
Two blankets were laid in your corner by one of the adults. Crispin was already sat on one, Carrots laying between you two. You laid down on yours, a soft purple blanket, and turned on your side to face him. He leaned back, his blonde hair falling over his forehead. "You're my best friend, Crispin."
He looked away, his cheeks a light pink. "Goodnight, y/n." You smiled, it wasn't often he called you by your name. A gentle lullaby filled the room and you were asleep, the last thing you saw was Crispin talking, but you couldn't make out the words.
A nightmare woke you from your nap. You had it often at home, dreaming that the branch outside your window would grow sentient and claw its way inside to steal you. You shuddered, reaching out for Carrots and Crispin, but all you saw was Lily's plushie, its head severed.
You held back hot tears and rolled over, looking around. The closed blinds allowed in slivers of light. In the dim room you could see Crispin, another baby beside him. The pigtails were so familiar... Lily. Another shadow passed between them and baby hands exchanged goods. Crispin held his favorite snack in his hand with a satisfied smile, and Lily held onto Carrots.
You pushed off your blanket, stomping as you stood. Before you started towards them Lily began to cry, the rest of the babies waking up around you. Horrified gapes and more cries erupted as they caught sight of the headless plushie. You looked around horrified, but the cries were too loud to explain yourself.
You thought the world was caving in. Babies rushed you in a whir of sticky hands and high pitched shouts. You slapped a few hands away and the tears began to spill.
Lily cried out again and every baby turned to look at her. Triumphantly, she held Carrots above her head. Then she threw him down against the hard floor, over and over again. Small arms held you back as you thrashed to save your toy. Babbles around you told you that a plushie killer deserved this.
You looked around helplessly as Carrots' back leg broke off. Where was Crispin? Another crack of wood and his ear split off. You covered your eyes with your hands as you heard a snap that was surely his head.
The other babies let go and you ran at Lily. The ground disappeared beneath you as arms pulled you up, one of the adults frowned at you and Lily. You wailed, your throat dry and hurting, as they carried you into another room.
You never saw Carrots again. The next day, you were dropped off at a new daycare, with new babies. And without Crispin.
