You let go of Teddy's fuzzy hand when Crispin took a step closer. For a moment he passed in front of the night light, but the stars were back before you could worry.
"I didn't know that was your teddy," Crispin said, his tone unreadable. You backed away from the crib's bars, standing in the middle of the crib helplessly.
"What are you doing here?" You managed, crossing your arms. He could see through your facade, you were certain.
Crispin frowned, looking away from you then back. "I'm on a job to destroy Boss Baby and Tina Templeton."
Your words caught in your throat. "You're destroying more babies' lives?" Your gaze caught on Teddy. "You're destroying more of their friends..."
Crispin's face flushed with embarrassment and he pulled his gaze from yours. The splendor and confidence he had entered your room with had all but vanished. "I'm getting paid for it," he faked a smile, "and I'm really good at it."
"I'm aware," you scoffed, "I was your first victim." You grabbed Teddy with both hands and pushed him with all your might. He fell through the crib bars and landed loudly on the floor. Crispin paused, looking around and listening. No parents came. "Destroy him, I don't care, he's not Carrots."
Crispin winced at the name and dug his hand into Teddy's back. Unlike with Carrots, you had the courage to watch. Instead of shredding your new friend, Crispin pulled a ticking device from his back. With a few practiced motions, the tick and clanking stopped.
He held out Teddy between you two, shaking him a little. You held your composure, refusing to take the offer. Crispin exhaled and pushed the bear between the bars himself. Teddy landed face-first in the crib.
Neither of you had the courage to say you needed to. So you watched as Crispin crawled out of the window silently before hugging Teddy to your chest and crying.
