A month had passed since you seen Crispin and no baby had filled the role of your best friend. You were sitting in your crib, a teddy bear watching you from the corner. Your parents had bought him after losing Carrots, but it wasn't the same.
Teddy was all comfort and no imagination. As much as he wanted to, he couldn't heal the wound left behind from Carrots. Nothing could. The worry in your parent's faces hurt you, but you couldn't bring yourself to love Teddy. Nor any baby at your new daycare.
"Come on, y/n," your mom cooed, picking you up gently. You chomped down on your chupey as she carried you from your room. Teddy watched you depart sadly. "There's an afternoon play date with your daycare group! Thought it might perk you up." Your mom craned her neck at Teddy before closing the door behind you.
You were grateful when the clouds overshadowed the sun, relieving you from the summer heat. Piper and Vinny crawled beside you. "Hi y/n!" Piper called, sitting in front of you. Her black hair curled wildly around her head.
Vinny plopped onto the quilt beside you guys. The park was busy today, full of families with their children running around. The gleeful shouts of kids covered the natural birdsong. The parents talked beside you guys, checking in every now and then. "I was so," he hiccuped, "happy when mommy said we had another play date." He hiccuped again, causing Piper to smile.
"Mhm," Piper agreed. "My older brother was starting to annoy me, I needed some baby company!" You nodded along, nervously pinching the blanket beneath you.
"Should we play?" You asked, unsure what else to say. The others happily agreed and soon you were crawling after each other in a difficult game of tag.
You crawled off the blanket, the blades of grass tickling your wrist as you reached out, tapping Vinny's chubby ankle. You crawled as quick as you could away, blowing out a breath when you noticed him chasing after Piper instead.
A genuine smile was plastered on your face as your mom carried you away. You waved goodbye to Piper and Vinny and made a mental note to talk to them tomorrow at daycare. This was a step forward.
Your crib smelled different when your dad set you within, followed with a goodnight lullaby. Your star night light sparked to life when he flicked off the main light. Golden stars decorated the walls, keeping you safe.
'Crank' you heard. You shot up, staring through the bars of your crib. 'Crank' You spun around. The noise was coming from Teddy? You grabbed Teddy and tried to pull him, he moved an inch, too heavy to pull further. "Teddy? What's wrong with you!" You heaved with little progress.
'Creak' You yelped as you watched the window open. One small leg swung over the windowsill, then another. You tried to call out, to cry, but you were frozen.
"Hello playfriend," Crispin dropped into the room, straightening his shirt. His voice was different, there wasn't the warmth you used to feel in it. "By now you'll realize," he finally looked up, the words lost from him as he saw you. "Y/n..."
