I stood next to Reid as he stared at the board, his eyes darting over the notes as the sound of ruffling paper and sighs mixed with that of the sound of Morgan's voice muttering to Garcia down the phone. I tapped my fingers on the side of my arm as I focused on the crime scene photos, a bloody mangled form lay on the floor, red submerging the faces of each victim as they were left discarded on the floor in an illegible heap. I stared at the M.E. report that was slightly crumpled in my grasp. 30 different wounds, 5 of those being bullet wounds, 23 stab wounds and 1 being the final blow to the victims head. She was the one who got off the lightest. Perhaps it was her small stature that contributed to a quicker demise compared to the larger males and the one other female who all had upwards of 97. She was only 16 after all.
I shuddered slightly and moved away from the board, placing the M.E. report down I slouched in a chair across from JJ. I raised my eyebrows as she swore down the phone before scoffing and abandoning it on the table in a huff. "They say they won't issue a warning to the residents, not until there's a 'real' threat. Do they not know 8 people have died now?!" JJ hissed, smoothing her hair back from her face. "Well, by the time we uncover any substantial evidence pointing to whomever did this, they'll get their 'real threat'." I remarked dryly, my gaze flitting back towards the board. JJ observed my face before turning towards Morgan in her chair. Grinning, I watched Morgan and Garcia's exchange, a flurry of smirks and dirty words no doubtedly being passed back and forth between the pair. "Alright Baby Girl, thanks." Morgan smiled as he slipped his phone into his pocket. "What?" He asked facing us with a raised eyebrow, the direction of them something he seemed to have no control over.
JJ and Morgan greeted Reid as he ambled over to discuss the details of the case before us, a faded white noise in my mind as I mulled over the M.E. report. The 16 year old victim didn't really fit, especially taking into account the newest crime scene, the youngest victim being 22. Not to mention the obvious lack of violence inflicted on the 16 year old, plus there was a high chance that the autopsy report we were awaiting would show hesitation marks. "So... what do you propose we do?" JJ asked, prodding me from my thoughts. "Hmm? Oh, uh, right... I believe we ought to start with the younger victim from the first crime scene, for reasons which are obvious, especially if the autopsy report will display any signs of remorse or hesitation." I replied, glancing at Reid as he nodded enthusiastically. "Hard to see where the remorse would be." JJ remarked quietly, dragging her gaze away from the photos uncomfortably.
Morgan grimaced and looked away to sip his coffee, Reid excusing himself to go find a large bag of sugar for his 4th coffee in the last hour. I shifted from my seat and spoke to JJ. "Will you go with me to visit some of the victim's families?" I questioned, smiling slightly as she nodded, happy enough not to be anywhere near the bloody pictures. "Right, well, Morgan, would you mind staying here to go over the backgrounds and help Reid? And as soon as that autopsy report comes in, let me know yeah?" I asked, although it was really more of a statement, earning a nod from Morgan and a farewell.
I faltered slightly as me and JJ stood outside a house, the once shiny blue door peeling with age, a faded gold handle adjourned the side, a cracked flower pot creating a small pile of dark soil on the floor. JJ looked at me before reaching out to gently knock on the door, waiting in silence before it finally creaked open. "Miranda Berks? We're with the FBI, we would like to ask you a few questions if that's okay?" JJ spoke softly to the dark figure clinging to the door, the lack of lights protecting her from the harsh light of reality. Ushering us in, the figure retreated, directing us towards what I presumed was the living room. Placing a hand on the couch that was shrouded in darkness, I guided myself to sit, shivering slightly at the drop in temperature. I felt the sofa dip as JJ sat next to me, both of us watching as we attempted to make out Miranda who had quietly slipped onto the chair in front of us. "What would you like to know?" She spoke demurely, her hands clasping each other uncomfortably.
"Could you just...Perhaps tell us about your daughter? What was she like?" JJ gently pressed, smiling encouragingly. "My daughter..? Oh, uh... Well I suppose she was blonde and...Tall. Quite a trouble maker. And very loud. She talked a lot. Too much" Miranda shrugged, pulling at the end of her skirt. JJ smiled again. "What did she like doing? Did she have many friends?" She patiently questioned. Miranda shrugged awkwardly as she removed a tissue from her sleeve to dab her eyes. "Um, she liked to go outside, cause trouble... And she had a few friends I think. But I never saw them, she wasn't allowed friends over and she didn't really talk about them either, which was fine by me" Miranda grimaced and shifted slightly, before changing the topic. "Would you 2 like some tea? Or some cake? I baked one earlier, a lemon one." She said, her tone becoming light as she continued. "I've always enjoyed baking mind, it's a hobby. As well as singing! I sing, would you like to hear- Oh, actually let me just get some cake." She rushed out before standing up and rushing off, presumably towards the kitchen before either of us could decline.
JJ sent me a look before she sighing and then speaking "She seems quite...detached... it must have hit her quite hard I assume..." I nodded, frowning slightly. JJ thanked Miranda as she bustled back in the room, placing a tray of tea and cake on the low coffee table between us and chuckling as she placed it down, admiring the china that housed the tea. "Those teacups truly are nice, aren't they? I only bring them out for special occasions you know!" Miranda remarked cheerfully, plopping herself down and retrieving a saucer and cup. My nostrils flared as I narrowed my gaze at the woman in front of us, her eyes dancing as she cut off a slice of cake and tried it, squealing in delight as she swallowed. "It really is good, you should try some! My mother always said I was quite the gifted baker." She stated, shoving a plate towards my face. I glared before pushing the plate back, my stomach turning at the situation at hand. "Ma'am, we came here to find out more about your daughter, not you. We came here to help find out who took her life so cruelly, not listen to you ramble on about cake and feed us unhelpfully small tidbits of information regarding your daughter." I snapped, leaning forward as I spoke to the woman.
"If you are going to help us, do so before it's too late and another set of people end up dead." I retreated, staring coldly at the woman. Miranda looked taken aback, her eyes glancing at the plate she still had in her hand before lowering it slowly on the table. "Right... What did you want to know again?" JJ moved in her seat before speaking apprehensively. "Did your daughter have anyone who, uh, might have wanted to hurt her? Or was there maybe someone who had an obsession with her, or did something bad ever happen to her?" JJ inquired, scanning the woman's face. "Nope! Nothing ever happened to her, no one did anything to her. And nobody would ever have an obsession with her!" Miranda muttered defensively, glaring at JJ. "Are you sure?" I asked skeptically, forcing myself not to let my lip curl in disgust. "Yes I'm sure! I know her better than anyone! How dare you assume otherwise!" Miranda shrieked, standing up quickly. "Right." I huffed, standing up as well. "JJ, we're done here." I stalked out, stumbling slightly in the darkness before shoving open the door. JJ followed quickly behind me, her eyebrows furrowing in repulsion as she caught up to walk beside me. We both glanced at each other, silent words passing between us as we both concluded our opinions of the woman. I dug my hands into my jacket pocket and dialed Garcia, before she promptly picked up and greeted me as if she was the embodiment of joy itself. "I need a full background check of Miranda Berks and the immediate surrounding family." I declared as me and JJ slipped into the SUV. "Yes ma'am!" Garcia replied. "I'll get it done as soon as possible."
