"Okay, JJ I need you to talk to Mrs Perth and try and get any information out of her regarding her husband and his relationship with his niece. Rossi, I need you and Morgan to- interview Mr Perth as quickly and efficiently as possible-- The clock is ticking, let's find Abby and get her back home safe and sound. Let's go people!" I urged the team who I had gathered around a table to relay the new plan. Patting Reid on the back, I led him towards the outside of the interrogation room, hoping his sharp brain may lend some insight into Mr Perth's slimy mind.
Reaching across the room I flipped the switch of the small black box perched on the side-table, a low hum crackled before it died down and was replaced with the voices of those in the room. Staring out the one-way glass I crossed my arms and gripped my sides, my feet anxiously shuffling on the ground, my body swaying. "How long before he cracks?" I questioned, glancing at Reid briefly as he frowned, contemplating a thousand thoughts in his head, before murmuring his reply. "I can't precisely say... He's difficult to read..."
"He's a strange man. I don't know what it is, he seems perfectly normal but there's just something that's not right. His eyes dart about when we get near him as if he's nervous, and he fidgits with his hands when he thinks no one's watching." I huffed, squinting my eyes as the man behind the one-way glass as Reid nodded in agreement.
The interaction between the two agents and the offender unfolded, a flurry of heated exchanges lasted a full minute before the offender suddenly stopped playing coy. Craning my head to hear the crackly speech from the intercom, I froze. Listening to the words I felt bile rise up in my throat, my vision blurry and my head reeling.
"What did you do..?"
I stumbled back and clutched a hand to my mouth to stop the contents of my stomach making an appearance.
"I figured she would let her little mouth run sooner or later, so I had to find somewhere to keep her quiet." The man spoke quietly, his voice hoarse as he began. "She was of no use to anyone. Until I found a way. I helped her! And she helped everyone else..." He rambled, his hand gripping his hair as he shifted in his seat. Rossi looked uneasily at Morgan before prodding the man. "How did she help everyone...?" Rossi murmured, his eyes darting across the man's face.
"She made sure they weren't hungry."
My head spun faster, my feet stumbled towards a paper waste basket in the corner of the room where my lunch was swiftly deposited.
"She's dead!" He whispered in a sing-song voice. "Dead, dead, dead!" He laughed, his sudden change in behavior becoming more apparent by the second. Wiping my mouth with the back of my hand I straightened up, attempting to ignore what the man just said I watched him, waiting for any sign as to what he might do. I looked towards Reid as his eyes met mine, shivers going down both our spines. "They need to leave."
I stumbled to the other side of the room and pressed the intercom that allowed me to speak to Rossi and Morgan "Get out of there, now!" I shouted, pressing another button to unlock the heavy metal door. "We need security, go Reid!" I urged, pushing him towards the exit. Unhooking my gun from my belt I faltered by the door that was now unlocked, waiting for a sound. Upon hearing a loud thump, I swung the door open and raised my gun, allowing the barrel to fix upon the deranged man Morgan was wrestling on to the floor.
Wiping the blood from his face, Rossi picked up his own firearm and aimed, watching as I carefully walked closer to aid Morgan. Tossing him a pair of handcuffs with my free hand, I felt another shiver run down my spine as my eyes locked with those of the man on the floor. Crazed and hysterical, he attempted to spit at me as Morgan wrestled his wrists into the handcuffs.
I holstered my gun as Morgan dragged the creature up from the floor and hesitantly gripped his arm. With two armed agents side by side of him, the man seemed not to care. Writhering in our grasp, he tossed back and forth, feet dragging on the ground as me and Morgan dragged him out of the room. "She's gone, gone, gone!" He sang, grinning at me as his crazed eyes stared straight through me, dancing with delight at the situation.
"Where is she?" I hissed, my anger bubbling over. Glancing at Morgan as he tightened his grip on the man, I spoke again, coming dangerously close to the man's face. "What did you do with Abby?" At the sound of her name, he stopped altogether and stood stock still. "Abby?" He murmured, finally going quiet. Nodding, I pulled him closer and whispered in his ear. "You know where she is, don't you? We only want to see her." I drew back, resisting the urge to shiver at our close proximity. "Yes, okay." He muttered simply, pointing towards the end of the hallway.
Nodding at Morgan, we dragged the man, following the directions of his still hand as it pointed, barely moving. The man dropped his hand suddenly, causing us to halt at the end of the hall. Looking up he let out a little giggle before raising his hand again and pointing at the air vents.
"There."
Determined to stay professional, I dared not breathe a word towards the monster beside me and quietly asked Morgan to fetch someone to switch off the air-con that was releasing cool air throughout the mall. Gesturing for a few police officers who were hurriedly making their way towards us with Reid in tow, I shoved the man towards them, desperate to rid the feeling of his skin from mine. Exchanging looks with Reid and Rossi, I shook my head slowly.
"Keep it together, for as long as possible, okay?" I got out, turning my back to the vent. Nodding, Reid and another officer ran off to secure the area and begin the search for the girl whilst Rossi stayed behind. Coming closer towards me, he put an arm around my shaking shoulders. "No matter what we find, we must stay strong. For Abby's family as much as ourselves." He sighed, pulling me into a brief hug. I hummed in reply, screwing my eyes shut in an attempt to rid myself of the crazed eyes still burning bright in my mind. "Let's do this." I murmured, wiping my eyes.
A small amount of the remains of Abby Perth were discovered in the air vent that afternoon. The rest of Abby was nowhere to be seen. Until 3 days later the traces of the young girl were found on a few dirty dishes from a fast-food restaurant in the mall. You can perhaps guess the rest.
In light of the details of the case, Strauss declared the BAU temporarily unavailable for a week. Reid spent the time in his apartment, unaware whether it was night or day. Morgan purchased another house and spent his time smashing walls and painting the ones he left standing. JJ sought the comfort of Garcia and her endless chattering to drown out the memories in her head. I took up drinking whiskey with Rossi in front of his fireplace while we attempted to cheer one another up. As for Hotch, I could not say. All I knew is that we would see him on our first week back.
