1932 words.

Everyone considered him the coward of the county

He'd never stood one single time to prove the county wrong

His mama named him Draco,

But folks just called him yellow

Something always told me, they were reading Draco wrong

Draco Malfoy had never been in a fight, his entire time at Hogwarts he avoided people, everyone really, he knew that way nobody could get to him, if nobody knew him well enough then he'd be okay. He'd had a decent childhood, he loved his mother and she cherished him right back, his father had done some bad things and ended up in Azkaban, but he still loved him, it was his dad after all and despite his flaws, he'd always tried to do his best by Draco, he just had a temper. Draco had always been taught to compose himself with dignity and not inherit his father's temper, which meant no fighting, he didn't want to end up in prison as well. Though that mindset wasn't common as a teenage boy and meant people at school weren't the nicest, but not a single one of them knew anything about Draco or his reasons for why he behaved in this way, if they did, they might just follow suit. But of course, the bullying started when he was around thirteen, Goyle and his brothers were the worst, they'd beat Draco black and blue purely because they thought he was a coward, that he couldn't defend himself. He'd go home with scrapes and bruises and his mother would tend to him. She'd always ask if he had hit back and when he said no, the look of pride on her face was worth every punch he ever took. He may have been the laughing stock of the school and they may have assumed he couldn't defend himself and that he'd take anything he got, and they were right, but when he thought about his mother's smile, he couldn't bring himself to care.

He was only ten years old when his daddy died in prison

I looked after Draco cos he was my brother's son

I still recall the final words my brother said to Draco

Son, my life is over but yours has just begun

When Draco lost his father it changed him, made him the man he is today and though he missed his dad every day, he knew in himself he'd be proud of Draco, for everything he has done, for rising about the childish boys at school. Draco also had some help from his Uncle Severus, him and his father had always been close and after Lucius died, Severus had taken on his father's role and done everything in his power to make sure Draco had a good life and was raised properly. Severus taught Draco all the things his father should have been able to, how to do basic spells for around the house, how to tie a tie when the Yule ball rolled around, he took him to get his first tailored suit for that evening as well. Safe to say, Draco was in good hands.

Promise me, son, not to do the things I've done

Walk away from trouble if you can

Now it won't mean you're weak if you turn the other cheek

I hope you're old enough to understand

Son, you don't have to fight to be a man

His father's last words stayed in Draco's mind every single day of his life, he would never let himself forget them, and he was in fact old enough to know exactly what his father meant, he didn't want Draco to end up like him. After seeing what it did to his mother, Draco wouldn't let himself end up there either, so he took his father's advice, he never raised his hand to anybody. Everybody thought he was weak, that he couldn't fight, he knew the truth though. He knew that every single day that he didn't hurt another person, he was living by his father's words and making his mother and uncle proud. Despite what the boys at school would say, that he should be in Hufflepuff, that he wasn't a real Slytherin because Slytherins weren't cowards, Draco knew fighting had nothing to do with being a coward or not, being a man or not. Fighting was childish and immature and not a single person was worth breaking his promise to his father. That was until he met Harry.
