haley's pov . prologue

"god, just leave me alone!" i yell, slamming the car door as i got out.my boyfriend, ethan, gets out of the car, slams his door and grabs my wrist before i could walk away.
"hales! i don't know what is up with you, what's your problem??" he shouts back, although we were standing right in front of each other.
"my problem? my problem is that you told
me you were at home last night and i saw on gia's story that you were at her party! and all we do is fight, ethan. can't you see?!" i raise my voice once again. it was true, we always argue. that was all our relationship ever was other than making out. it's like he didn't trust me, well i didn't really trust him either."am i not allowed to go out?" he says, in an accusing tone, trying to pin it on me.
"are you kidding?! don't try to turn this on me! you lied to me. again!" i say in disbelief. i roll my eyes trying to walk away from the conversation as i was going to be late to class already. ethan grabs my wrist tighter, stopping me.
"what is wrong with you?! can you stop being such a bitch?" he spits, my eyebrows raise in shock. no way he just said that.
i scoff and slap him, the sound of my palm in contact with his face echoes in the school parking lot. in that moment, he lets go of my wrist and i quickly walk into school.
today was the last week of school before prom followed by graduation. arguing with ethan right now was the last thing i needed.
i spent the whole day avoiding ethan as i hung out with my cheer friends. my sister, sabrina was in la for a movie premiere and because she was attending the grammy's. my best friend, jayla, sits next to me in the cafeteria with her lunch. however, i noticed that my other friend, gia, hadn't been around me in a while.
gia, jayla and i have been best friends for years. they knew all my secrets, and i knew theirs. i couldn't have asked for better friends. though his had been drifting recently, but i didn't think much of it.
"hey," she notices the solemn expression on my face, "what's wrong?"
"nothing just fighting with ethan again," i say tiredly.
"im glad you guys broke up, you deserve so much better hales," she rubs my arm.
"what? we didn't break up," i say confused.
"you didn't?" she asks back equally as confused. "i assumed you did because i wouldn't want to be with someone who did that to me."
my eyebrows scrunch together in confusion as i blink, "did what?"
her face pales,"haley, you don't know?"
"don't know what!" i snap, frustrated. i quickly apologise at my outburst as she continues.
"ethan made out with gia at her party," jayla informs me, with a sympathetic look on her face.
hurt is written all over my face, as i feel my heart physically break. i know he wasn't the best boyfriend but i didn't think he'd actually cheat on me.
"oh, haley. i'm sorry," she sits closer, wrapping her arms around me.
i feel tears fall from my eyes as i hug her back. i tried to stifle my sobs. jay takes my hands and leads me to the bathroom. i sat on the sink counter with my legs crossed as she passes me some toilet paper to wipe my tears.
"i just- i didn't think he would actually..do this and with gia?," i admit, more tears welling in my eyes.
jayla listens to me, while i rant to her.
"when we first got together it was perfect, i mean he was everything. he was sweet and he just understood me. he even met my dad jay," my voice cracks at the mention of my father.
my father passed away when i was 14. before he died, i had already started dating ethan so he had met him before. my dad was never fond of him but tolerated him because he made me happy. now, it made me feel as though i had let him down because i chose to stay with ethan and he hurt me.
jay started tearing up, pulling me into a hug as i cry into her shoulder. she knew i didn't like talking about my dad, so when i brought him up she knew it was bad.
i haven't opened up to many people about this because nobody i know understands what it's like to lose a parent. except one, sabrina. her parents had gotten divorced and she's the only one who really gets it when i open up to her about this.
"why would she do this?" i ask with my voice filled with hurt, as if jayla could give me
the answer."i don't know, hales...you should go talk to her," she answers, truthfully. i nod as i try containing my tears.
we spend the rest of lunch in the bathroom as jayla calms me down.
after school i find myself at gia's house.
i raise my fist, knocking on the door.
the door swings open, revealing a wary gia. "oh-hales, what are you doing here?"
"we need to talk," i say, clearly not having it right now.
she moves aside, allowing me to go in. we walk into her bedroom.
"so-"
"i know what you did, gia! god how can you do this again!" i cut her off, getting to the point. she had already done this before and i had managed to put that behind us and forgive her but now it was happening all over again.
she looks stunned and guilty as she starts to try explain. "hales, the last time-"
" 'the last time'?! do you hear yourself right now! the last time you kissed my boyfriend!?" i yell in disbelief at how crazy she sounded.
"that is not fair haley! you guys are toxic, it shouldn't even matter!"
"he's my boyfriend! does that mean something different in your head??"
"okay, but the last time you guys fought, you said you really didn't miss him-" she tries to excuse but i cut her off with a slap to her face.
"don't you dare. don't you dare twist my words and try to make it seem like you're not a backstabbing two faced bitch! because you are gia, and you know it," i scoff, leaving the room.
"fine! i don't need you anyway!" she yells out to me as i walk down the hallway.
