A cup of self-control

Espresso sat hunched over a creaky wooden desk that was so graciously supplied to him. Notes covered in mathematical expressions scattered the desk.

He leaned back into the chair and cracked his back. Then began the array of sounds from Espressos, bones popping and faint groaning filled the dorm.

Latte flipped over to stare at Espresso with a cocked eyebrow.

"You done yet? You sound like an old man Espresso."

Lattes tone was teasing but it still irritated Espresso, especially since Latte was older than him.

"Grandpa? Are you not in your fourth year of college while I'm only in my second year?"

Espresso had a smug look on his face which was met with a pillow smashed against it causing his head to jerk back.

"Just go to bed for once, I am tired of my only white noise being your crackling bones!"

Espresso huffed loudly tossing the pillow back to Latte. She had a point. He needed to sleep. But Espresso was a stubborn soul.

"I don't need sleep, I need to study."

"No, you need a chiropractor..."

Espresso went silent at Lattes remark. He knew she was just being a baby so he ignored it, simply going back to studying.

                             ————————

Espresso sat staring down at his coffee maker like a zombie as he waited for it to finish brewing.

It was quite the awkward position as it was one-AM and the only light on was the light from his phone to not disturb Latte.

Espresso winced hearing the loud noises coming from the old coffee-maker, it was on its last limb from how often Espresso used it.

However after a minute or so his mug was filled to the brim. It originally belonged to Latte but Espresso took it and used it for himself.

Espresso switched off the machine and went back to his desk waiting for the coffee to cool down before he could drink it.

His eyes felt dry and irritated from how often he was rubbing them, he needed his eyes to focus for once.

Espresso had been out of class for a few days due to a terrible cold causing him to be behind.

The stress of being set back and having a major test the next day was hitting Espresso hard. He tried to get notes from a fellow class mate, blueberry-pie. But unfortunately, not everyone was blessed with neat handwriting.

"Her hand writing looks like the hieroglyphics she studies..."

Affogatos voice scared him. He was Espressos second roommate, he wasn't usually arriving this late. And whispering insults in Espressos ear but I suppose today was different.

"That is quite the rude take,"

Espresso sipped on his now cooled off coffee turning to look at Affogato.

"but I'd have to agree on that.."

Affogato laughed tiredly, his nimble hand covering his mouth to muffle it.

Espresso cracked a small smile which quickly faded remembering his third roommate that was meant to be here, in his top bunk. But Madeleine wasn't there, for some odd reason.

"Where is that nuisance Madeleine? Where has he gone off to?"

Espressos tone impatient looking up to Affogato who simply shrugged.

"I have no idea, we are not acquaintances."

"He is our roommate, how have you two not spoken."

"I just ignore his attempts at conversation, it's easy honestly Espresso."

"Easier said than done Affogato..."
