"Lilly.." I sigh loudly pinching the bridge of my nose. Do we have to do this every night??? Damn dog.. "It's midnight, bed time. Not hole digging time! You're a granny! You need your rest!" I spout to my dog with a huff, walking inside to slide off my slippers. Putting on my outdoor shoes instead, I quickly return to my front porch and walk down the steps into the wildly overgrown backyard that's bordering the expansive Vermont mountains.

My 14 year old elderly Husky/Rottweiler mix stands next to the garage digging a hole into the ground while panting hard. I huff and pick up the chain inwardly grumbling incoherent slurs to my asleep grandfather who refuses to swap the thick metal chain out to something lighter. She's had this thick metal chain that's used on cows since she was a puppy. She used to be able to pull it no problem when she was younger, now she's having a harder time dragging it around. I have to go down and pull it for her up the steps so she doesn't strain herself.

"C'mon Granny!" I lift the metal portion for her, she looks up at me and practically smirks. Knowing she got her way, she walks up the steps leisurely while I tug the chain up for her. "You're lucky you're my child dog." I shake my head at her with a fond smile. Willing to do anything if it makes her more comfortable in her final months.

I open the door for her and unhook her, allowing her to waltz indoors with a smile. Huffing out I quickly step inside and lock the door behind me, tugging on it to make sure it's actually locked. I flip the switch next to the door, shutting off the outdoor light. My dog patiently waiting near the refrigerator for her payment for going to the bathroom.

"Fine! Fine.. damn cranky granny." I open the fridge and grab a mini Hershey's chocolate bar, breaking it in half. "Your payment my liege." I eat one half and give her the other with a bow and flourish, she crunches on it happily. You're spoilt now dog.. We give her anything she wants.. since she's on the last lap of her life. Her back legs are withering away and her mind is slowly going down the gutter. Often at night she becomes confused and experiences Sun Downing.. It's something that happens with humans that have dementia.. She's happy for now, but when she starts having issues.. we're gonna bring her to be put down. Not wanting her to suffer needlessly.

I quickly wash my hands at the kitchen sink before I grab some Hershey bars from the fridge. Making my way towards my bedroom using my phones light to lead the way in the dark house.

I stop just outside my door and look to Lilly, doing my nightly routine... Just in case. "Goodnight Lilly, I love you. I'll see you in the morning." I smile at her before walking into my room, leaving my door open if she gets anxious and starts to sun down. She can come either to me or my grandfather to calm down. My elderly cat Lucifer follows after me, having been waiting for me to come back in. He's my little body guard and never leaves my side ever since I rescued him when he was a kitten.
