"This is Skylar, our new classmate" Fleur introduced her.

"Good morning" Sky said, trying to smile. "For me, it's the same as for Lexie."

The girl didn't feel like thinking about the menu, so she decided that the ginger tea and chicken sandwich that a friend had just ordered would be a good choice.

They sat on red sofas on either side of the table, right by the large window. The leather on the seat creaked ominously, but the couches turned out to be exceptionally comfortable. Sky glanced around the room. There were six or seven tables and a couple of bar stools right by the counter. A young man with dark, perfectly smooth skin approached them to give their order. He greeted with a short "Hi" and a charming smile. Short black curls fell over his forehead as he placed a tray of teas in front of them.

"Hi Alex," Lexie said cheerfully, "I haven't seen you here in a long time"

"I'm still trying to help my father, but these last Alpin's classes are killing me, I'm still stuck in books, I'm sick of this guy.

"Oh, don't even mention him" Sky sighed.

"You are Skylar, right?" Alex looked at her, waiting for an answer.

"Yeah, yeah, I'm the one who fooled around in front of the whole class this morning at Alpin's class."

"I don't know anything about that, but Headmistress Muelphie mentioned you to me a few days ago. I heard you were captain of the multimagic team at your previous school."

Lexie and Fleur gave her a questioning look. The morning classes with Alpin probably did not contribute to building the image of a smart witch, which was probably why they were so surprised.

"Yeah, but I'm not anymore" Sky replied, a little more harshly than she'd intended.

"Nothing's lost. You can join the Rosenwand team, we are one person short."

"The captain?" Sky asked before she could bite her tongue. The corner of Alex's mouth curled up in a swashbuckling yet friendly smile.

"I'm the Captain. But I'd love to see you at our practice on Friday if you'd like to join us."

A slight blush of embarrassment appeared on Sky's pale face. How could she even think the team would take her on as captain right away? Especially since she didn't herself best to the class from the very beginning. Fortunately, Fleur and Lexie were already busy with their sandwiches, so they didn't pay much attention.

"How's Jenna?" We haven't seen her in a long" Lexie asked, and Fleur suddenly perked up.

"You know her, my sister is always busy. This month she's preparing some kind of exhibition for an art gallery. Finally, these paintings of her will move out of our living room, there is really no room for them in the house. Besides, she is working on a portfolio, maybe she will be able to get into an art school in London. She's always dreamed of it, and now that our father can afford it, maybe she'll be able to make that dream come true.

"Great, congratulate her for us" Lexie smiled and took another bite of her sandwich, which was dripping sauce onto her plaid uniform.

"You didn't mention anything about the contest," Fleur turned to Sky reproachfully, as if forgetting that they had only met a few hours ago. "It's a big deal, winners are always the most popular people in school. Was it like that in yours too?

"Let's just say everyone was popular at my school."

Fleur was still looking at her questioningly.

"Dovedale High is mostly attended by rich kids. And those who somehow managed to get a high scholarship. I belonged to the second group, I do not come from a rich family. I don't even know who my father was."

Sky regretted adding that last sentence because Lexie made the world's saddest, compassionate face.
