I started making breakfast after enough time had passed. My mind still ran circles around itself, so making breakfast really helped me distract myself.
By the time Maya and Kevin left their rooms, I'd already finished three plates of eggs and handed one to each of them. They took it with a smile, thanking me for the food.
Maya also noticed my horn missing when she took the plate from me. "Wait, did you figure out how to control your horn or something?"
"I actually did!" I said enthusiastically. "Now I can control how long it is. Well I can't make it grow any longer, but I can shorten it enough that it's essentially invisible. So I'd love to head to school with you today, if that's alright."
"Of course it is! I already invited you. And I'm glad you figured out how to hide the horn. I bet you would've stayed up all night over it!"
I laughed. "Yeah, I totally would've. But I stayed up anyway since I was so distracted by it all. Oh! I'm gonna grab a few books, then I'll be ready to leave!"
I rushed off to grab my things, sliding across the floors in my hurry. Once we were both ready, we strolled over to Maya's school.
Since nothing bad happened while I was gone yesterday, everything would probably be fine from here on out. Still, I wanted to have a true, final day at her school and didn't want to randomly leave without saying goodbye to Iris and some of the others. I also had one last thing I wanted to say to those rich kids. I wanted to ensure they never targeted Maya again.
We arrived perfectly on time, and I sat in my usual corner. I immediately opened my book, but could feel a pair of eyes staring directly at me. Feeling mildly uncomfortable, I looked up to meet the gaze. To my surprise, Mr. Sanchez was the one staring at me. He even seemed more confused than I did.
What? Did I do something wrong?
Not wanting to ask, I turned my attention back down to my book and tried to ignore that weird feeling. The class went on as usual and there were no real issues, so I couldn't figure out what happened earlier. By the time the bell rang, I'd even almost managed to forget about the teacher's strange gaze.
Maya came over to me so we could leave, but Mr. Sanchez followed her. Almost every other student had already left, and the one boy who remained could tell something was off. He darted out of the room in an instant.
"So... why is Jaye back? Did something happen?" he asked us calmly.
That's right! The last time I talked to this teacher, I told him what happened to Maya. I even explained how that was why I joined her here. He must've mistaken my reappearance as something bad happening.
Now it made sense.
I answered him, "Oh don't worry, nothing bad happened. I just felt a little sick yesterday and wasn't able to come. I was planning to join her at least one more day, so I came today instead."
"Hm," was all he said in response.
His gaze shifted between the two of us, like there was more he wanted to say. Feeling the awkward silence surrounding the space, I looked up at the clock and grabbed Maya's arm.
"Well now that that's cleared up, we need to get to her next class on time. See ya later!" I announced before rushing out of there.
We barely made it to her next class on time. I tried to distract myself with my book, but couldn't shake that weird feeling from before. Thankfully, none of Maya's other teachers cared about my presence, so we made it to lunch without any other issues.
I sat down with a sigh and leaned my head back. It felt nice to be in the cafeteria again. It was quite crowded and loud, but anything was better than sitting in a dreary classroom.
