Edmund traveled through the forest, following the road that would take him to the blazing town. His running pace was unusual for a human, moving quickly and agilely.
"You have arrived at your destination," exclaimed Syster, Edmund's personal computer assistant. He reached the town's large gate. Although the mechanism to lift the gate was broken, practically blocking the entrance to the town, there was a hole large enough for him to pass through. It looked like the work of dragons.
As Edmund passed through the broken gate, he was greeted by the town's grim scenery. Houses had been reduced to rubble, and bodies of civilians were scattered around. Some had lost their limbs, while others were trapped beneath collapsed buildings.
Before he could think of anything, he heard a scream, seemingly from a girl. Edmund rushed toward the sound, using Syster to pinpoint its exact location. He arrived at what seemed to be a tavern, or what used to be one. With his handgun drawn, he slowly entered the tavern, anticipating an ambush.
To his left was a staircase leading to the second floor, revealing that this place was more than just a tavern. Before he could proceed, he heard loud footsteps indicating someone running downstairs. Edmund readied his stance, positioning his index finger near the trigger in case it was an enemy.
To his surprise, it was a girl, the one who had screamed earlier. She made eye contact with Edmund, her eyes helpless. Seeing him made her look even more desperate, uncertain whether Edmund was a threat or not.
"Hey, are you okay?"
Edmund tried to attend to her, but another person came downstairs before he could reach her. This one appeared to be a soldier, and Edmund was sure he was an enemy.
The soldier grabbed the girl by her hair, violently throwing her around. Now Edmund had a reason to act, but before he could do anything, another soldier came downstairs. There were now three of them, and they were looking for the girl.
"You filthy Moonsonian scum! Go die with the rest of your friends!"
"No!"
Edmund immediately pointed his handgun at the soldier's head. The distance was good enough for a headshot, but before he pulled the trigger, he tried to defuse the situation. It probably wouldn't work, but it might be worth a try.
"Hey, let the girl go," he said to the soldier, who was still grabbing the girl's hair. The soldier's attention shifted to Edmund. He gazed at Edmund's out-of-this-world outfit and the fact that he was in the building with them.
"You there! Stay where you are. Hey, get him! He's making our job easier by coming in here," the soldier commanded his subordinates to apprehend Edmund. They walked towards him menacingly, trying to instill fear. Little did they know, they were about to meet their maker in seconds.
"Pity," he murmured, his voice devoid of emotion.
BLAM BLAM BLAM
The air exploded with the deafening crack of gunfire. One soldier crumpled, a scream escaping his lips, blood gushing out. His comrade lay unconscious by his side, and not long after, he too collapsed.
