How Did She Find Out?

Her breath hitched while the screen flickered, she shouldn't have turned on the TV...

She just stared at the screen, the photo of her best friend and the word above it... 'Missing' she hated how she was stupid enough to just find out...

Lola stared at her best friends Identity card photo; "Cassandra Anderson, known by most as Cassie, age 17, reported missing yesterday, 19 may 1995, last seen leaving her house. she has blonde hair and ash grey almond eyes, she has fair skin. she was last seen wearing a Magenta shirt, a hot pink ribbon in her hair and a pair of dark blue jeans, also had her phone, and a yellow handbag, her family have been on a business trip abroad for two months and can't come back anytime soon, they know Cassie is missing."  The reporter said before talking about the forecasts... Shit... How could Cassie go missing so randomly?  She's always so careless... but not so careless that she'd go missing from curiosity. Lola just knew her little sister would go- "She's our friend, she wouldn't just go missing like that, this is so strange... You should go to her house and investigate, you're the actual detective." of course she said that Lola should go alone, because all she was useful for was to solve cases, because 'that's a detective's job'. she should have chosen another job, because now they want her to solve every case in the city. for her 'image'

she was jealous, not of other detectives who got put on boards and had wiki pages, she was jealous of her sister who didn't have it hard, who was not the one holding all the burdens, who wasn't expected to be the best. who didn't need to be perfection, who was encouraged to make mistakes because it was normal. If Lola made a mistake she would not be fed, and was locked in the cabinet under the stairs, without light, food or warmth. if she said she hated it, that would be an understatement. she despised it with any and every fiber of her being.

she was only 10 when this started, and she doesn't remember the previous 9 years of her life before this. honestly, it was hell. and she remembers and knows every moment of these past eight years. she's noted them down, she's the devil at the doorstep... waiting for the perfect moment to knock and wait for them to open up the pretty white door.

"You shut up, seriously you annoy me." Lola said, pointing her sharp gaze at Lisa, who was eating pop tarts like they were her only chance of survival. Lola rolled her sage green eyes. "Pop tart addict..." Lola muttered before turning away, earning Lisa's attention "Coffee addict!" Lisa yelled across the room, Lola turned her head to look at her sister. "I can't afford to sleep, I'm too paranoid." Lola said, her statement followed by a sigh "that's your problem!" Lisa screamed, Lola practically had to cover her ears with how damn loud her sister was. "okay? then why did you address it without thinking I would explain why I always drink coffee?" she should have expect her sister to say the following line, actually she did. "BECAUSE LOWER CLASS STAYS QUIET!" Lola had a comeback for that anyway. "then stay quiet." that left Lisa completely stunned, that was good because she didn't want to hear her sister's voice. She turned back and walked away, and mumbled a final time "I'm leaving." she left to go to Cassie's house, which wasn't very far, just four blocks away. she opened the front door and walked out, her black sneakers kicking the pebbles on the ground. silently enjoying the cold night air, simply taking in the weather, it was gonna rain soon, as said in the forecasts.

it was cold and humid, exactly how she liked, she loved how nice it was, how relaxing it felt to be outside in the fresh and cool spring night air.

the stars gleamed and cast a bright screen of illuminating lights in the night sky. the moon flooding the streets with dim glow. She walked away from her home, it felt like freedom even if it's only temporary... She walked and walked, and made it to the right house, she looked at the sage blue door, and walked up to the green 'welcome' doormat and tucked her hand under it, her fingers gripped on the cold spare key as she pulled her hand out and placed the key in it's respected keyhole and twisted it impatiently until she heard a click and quickly opened the door.
