He got away with it.
Declan was left off with a warning, while I was given freaking detention.
DETENTION! That is so unfair!
I sat at my desk, my eyebrows knitted together with anger, as I wrote, I will not fight other students over and over again.
I was told to write it 150 times and to also drill it into my head.
I looked up to face the teacher who was watching me.
I guess you could say painting your nails while eating honey biscuits is watching someone.
Thanks to damn detention, I missed out on one of my favourite classes, English.
We were going to write a story and I was going to write about a girl who lived in the mountains, the Queen of dragons who owned 100 dragons with all sorts of special powers.
She would then marry a prince, and they would have a family, and they would be known as the-
I stopped in my tracks instead of writing, I will not fight other students. I began to write my dragon story instead.
I sighed.
I was beginning to feel uncomfortable on the small stool I was sitting on.
I was covered in mud and grass from head to toe and wanted nothing more than to hop in a warm bath, scrub my skin, and wash my hair until I was squeaky clean.
I grabbed my rubber and rubbed out the first few lines of my story. I have written 120 sentences of I will not fight other students, and by glancing at the clock, I knew I wouldn't finish it before the bell went.
Focus, Ruby; you can do it.
As minutes went by, the loud ringing of the bell went. And the teacher, who was watching me, looked at me sternly. "I hope your almost done Ruby."
I bit my tongue before anything rude came out of my mouth.
I would like to see you write the same sentence 150 times.
"Almost," I replied. And it was true, only 10 more sentences to go.
After I finally finished, I gathered up my papers and made my way into the principle's office. Walking in the empty school halls always made me feel sketchy. I didn't like the sound of my boots echoing against the cold wooden floor. The white walls seemed to cave in on me as I practically sped walked, eager to reach the office as fast as I could. When I finally arrived, I almost sighed with relief.
Only to see that I wasn't the only one there.
In the office, Declan and his mother. No, the Queen sat at the principal's desk.
Although the principal was smiling, I could tell Mr Gibson was nervous.
I knew it wasn't right, but I stopped outside the door to listen in.
I've only seen the Queen a few times; she was rarely at school, Rumour has it that she's mean and careless. The only good thing about her were her looks. She was a tall woman with hair so blonde it shone in the sun, her face was flawless; not one pimple could be spotted. She wore a long gown of bright green which showed off her curves and ran straight to the floor. Her big golden hoop earrings swayed back and forth from her round ears, unlike Declan's pointy ones. Although they were related, Declan barely looked like his mother.
Instead of blonde hair, Declan had black. His ebony hair was curly and bounced when he walked. Like I said before, his ears were quite unusual in Valoria. The tips would point up, like a fairy. No one would dare question him about his ears. No one but me. And when I did, I got a pinch on my arm.
"He's a stupid, foolish boy! He will never be like his father if his grades continue to be like this!" The Queen rambled.
Oh boy, she was mad.
Maybe Declan might be in for it after all.
I watched as Declan kept his head low. His lips were pressed into a thin line. His fingers fidgeting with each other in his lap.
"Your majesty please do not worry, with a few more private lessons and a little scolding, I'm sure Declan will transform into a smart and well behaved young man." Gibson stammered. His eyes full with worry.
Declan then turned to his mother "Mother I'll try harder I promise-"
I watched in horror as the Queen raised her hand and slapped Declan right across the cheek.
Hard.
I clamped my hand over my mouth and hid behind the door.
The loud slap still replaying in my mind.
This isn't what I wanted at all. I wanted Declan to be scolded, but not like this.
"Don't call me that, how could you call me mother as you're failing your classes?" The Queen screeched.
"You dumb stupid child, how are you going take over the damn kingdom!"
Silence.
"Look at you covered in mud, looking like some poor, disowned peasant, ah! I can't even look at you!"
I could feel my heart pounding in my ears. I knew the Queen was mean, but this is pure cruelty.
"Your Grace, I beg of you to calm down." Mr Gibson pleaded
I left my papers on the ground near the door before running out of there.
I have seen enough.
