(This is not a y/n story even though it may seem like it at first I promise)

"I won the bet."
I could see your heart drop as your boyfriend's friend handed him $20. They all laughed. Of course that's all it was. A bet. $20 if you can get the weird kid to date you. Your love was worth $20 to them. You must have been thinking, were you really that pathetic? You tried to fight off the tears that were starting to well in your eyes. You wouldn't give them the satisfaction of crying. You couldn't. You looked up at Trevor's smug face. You probably should have seen it coming. Why would a sporty frat boy be gay, let alone want you? You couldn't stop the tears from running down your face and dripping down your chin. I couldn't stand them. How could someone be so cruel? I balled up my fists and decked him in the face. He stumbled backward, his friends catching him before he could fall. You looked at me for the first time and my heart fluttered, but I had to stay focused. I stepped towards Trevor, about to take another swing. Being the coward he is, Trevor runs off with the rest of his friends. Once they were gone, I turned back to you. God you were so beautiful, even with tears streaming down your face.

"Are you ok?" I asked, trying to compose myself. Seeing you like this broke me, and all I wanted to do was whisk you away from this cruel place. You sniffled, seemingly trying to compose yourself as well.

"Not really..." At least you were honest. You were always honest, too honest for your own good. You put your heart out into the world, and it spit it right back at you.

The bell rang, and students started to pour out of classes and into the hallway. You looked embarrassed and tried to quickly wipe the tears from your face. Right then and there I decided to get you out of there. I grabbed your hand and walked quickly towards the side door of the school, pulling you with me.

"Where are we going?" You asked, confused.

"Away." I said, grabbing the key I stole off the janitor. You would later scold me for my crime, and I would laugh it off. You were always such a rule follower, which is why you stopped me just as I unlocked the door.

"We can't leave! We'll miss class!"

I tilted my head. Even now I can't understand why you refused to break the rules, even in your state of mind.

"Do you really want to go to class? Besides, it's just two classes. We won't miss much."

You frowned, weighing your options before taking a deep breath.

"I guess not..."

Receiving your approval I continued to pull you out the door, checking to make sure no teachers were watching. We started running down the hill towards the parking lot, and I felt the familiar exhilarating feeling of freedom. We reached my car and I opened the door for you. You seemed nervous about getting into a stranger's car, but the strong desire to leave overpowered your caution. I got in as well and we drove off.

"Where are we going?" You fidgeted in your seat. Socializing wasn't your strong point, but that was one of the things that drew me to you. I knew I wouldn't have to pretend in order to please you.

"The beach. Is that alright?" You nodded.

The ride was silent, but we didn't mind. We never needed to talk to enjoy each other's company. You rested your head on your hand, and I couldn't resist quick glances of you. Your sad hazel eyes glistened in the sun and I found myself getting mesmerized by them.

By the time we reached the beach, the sun had disappeared behind the clouds and the wind had picked up. The beach was empty as I pulled into the parking lot. We got out and were hit with the ocean breeze and the smell of the salty air. I led you down to the shore and there we sat, side by side, listening to the waves crash against the sand.

"I just realised, I don't even know your name." You said, giving me a half smile.

"Dimitri, and you?"

"Casey."

I smiled. I finally knew your name. Casey. It was a beautiful name, and it fit you perfectly. You looked back down and I couldn't help but stare as your ashy blonde hair blew in the wind. I quickly turned away when you looked back at me.

"Why'd you defend me?"

The question caught me off guard. When I looked into your eyes, they were filled with tears again. It pained me to see you so distraught. I'd do anything to bring back the smile you gave me before.

"They were being cruel. I wasn't going to just let them. If I had, I might as well have been just as bad. Besides, you don't deserve that. You don't deserve him."

You gave me that half smile of yours, but it quickly went away.

"I should have seen it coming. I think I did, deep down. I was just so excited that someone, anyone, wanted to be my friend, let alone love me. I just wanted someone to love me."

Your voice cracked as you said the last sentence and I wanted nothing more than to kiss your lips and be that someone, but I thought it would have been too soon. I regret that decision everyday.

"I'll be your friend."

You looked up at me, hope in your shiny eyes.

"Really?"

I nodded, and you smiled wide, like it was the happiness news you could ever receive. I couldn't help but return your smile. You always did have a contagious smile. I pulled out a pack of cigarettes and offered you one, which you took hesitantly.

"I've never smoked..."

"It's alright, I'll teach you." I said, pulling out a lighter. Later you'd tell me that once you got home your mom was furious you had skipped class and smelt like cigarettes. You told me you had blamed it on me, saying you didn't touch a single one. I wonder if you had told them the truth, would they have let us hangout? I wouldn't have cared. I'd still find a way, for you. As the smoke floated up and the sun slowly started to set, I truly felt at peace for the first time in a while, and I could tell you did too. I told myself then and there I wouldn't let anything bad happen to you, that I'd never leave you.

It was just us against the world.
