From Here to Eternity

Her Lullaby

She came running to her room and plopped on the bed. Her heart was racing out of the ribcage. She thought of the moment that they shared a couple of minutes before. Her mind was not ready to accept the progress that the heart doing right now.

She was continuously staring at the floor when she heard noise from the other room. She wiped her eyes and left to see. She entered to the room and stood in the threshold to see Spoorthi was constantly crying and Meera and others were trying to calm her down. Sandhya moved in and looked at Spoorthi who was constantly crying by getting hiccups in between. Meera was holding the medicine for her. But she was nowhere in the position to give heed to her. Meera was feeling restless and her eyes shedding tears looking at Spoorthi who is constantly crying.

'Enna achu Anni?'
(What happened sister in law?....) Sandhya moved towards her and caressed Spoorthi's head and panicked realising her body is burning hot.

'Anni enna ipdi odambu kothikuthu?'
(Her body is burning hot?)
She lifted the kid who was constantly crying because of the fever.

'eveninglenthu semma fever Sandhya....naama ice cream saptutu iruntha timela namakku theriyama ivalum ice cream saaptuta...syrup kudutha kudimaatera....edhum sapda maatenra....azhuthute irukaa..'
(Since evening she is having fever Sandhya....at the time we had ice cream, without our knowledge she too had it....she is not taking medicines or having anything to eat....she is crying continuously....)
Meera was sobbing looking at her daughter's condition.

'Avalukku cold water pack kudu Meera...'
(Give her a cold water pack on her forehead Meera....)
Narmadha said.

'Konjam kashayam kuduthalum...avalukku konjam kekum...'
(Even herbal drink will make her better.....)
Sumithra said. Indira brought the herbal balm to rub on her chest to reduce cough.

'Edhuva irunthalum...ava modhala enna seiya vidanum ma...azharthu nirutha maatenra....'
(Whatever may be....she should first let me do it ma...she doesn't seem to stop crying....)
She sobbed looking at Spoorthi.

'Yei..ithu normal fever..ithukkue nee ivlo down aana enna panrathu?' (hey.....this is a normal fever....if you become low...then how will you take care of her?)
Preethi consoled her. All the while Sandhya was trying to calm down Spoorthi.

Sandhya sat on the bed and laid Spoorthi on her lap and asked Meera for the syrup. Meera gave it to her. Sandhya recited rhymes and diverted her. She got diverted for couple of minutes and she used that time to give her medicine. But she started crying the minute she swallowed the medicines which was bitter. Indira fed her a drop of honey to fade the medicine taste. She was restless and was wiggling her legs showing her restlessness.

Sandhya didn't know how to console her. She lifted her and rocked her by laying her on her arms. The next minute everyone stunned by hearing the song from her voice including Akash who came to the room on seeing the people crowded. The minute she started to sing, Spoorthi gradually stopped her cries. She was constantly rocking her.

Spoorthi drifted to sleep as she felt comfortable in her arms. Akash eyes welled up looking at Sandhya. Not only him, the entire family members eyes brimmed with tears. Her voice was soul but reflected pain in her heart.
