For the past few days everyone had decided there was a beast living with them on the island. There had never been any proof of its existence, well until a set of twins had stumbled across it resting at the highest point of their prison. The peak of the mountain, a place of solitude and simultaneously the location they had decided to build a signal fire. Ralph had ordered two boys to go stay up and watch the fire making sure it was constantly burning. This week it had fallen upon Sam and Eric to keep watch. Ralph hadn't taken into account the twins' cowardice.
One night as the fire burnt into ashes, eating itself to death -whilst the boys whose job it was to keep it burning slept- a sort of slamming noise was heard. Sam and Eric awoke as something hit the ground. The twins had been surrounded in endless darkness, the fire unlit only sparks were left. Now standing in front of the charcoal was a shadow. A shadow that was moving, slowly rising and falling. Its face obscured from the twins.
This was their evidence, this was the beast...it had to be. Sam yelped as he accidentally punched Eric in the stomach causing the other boy to look over. The figure raised its arm forcing the boys to flee. Once they had gotten back to the huts they informed the others about the monster. None dared to climb the forest, the hunters having changed their range. The mountain would go untouched. However a young albino boy Simon never seemed to really believe in the beast.
Simon was in the forest. He had been for the past hour. Everything was too loud, the fighting of the boys during the meeting, the sound of cries and whimpers during the night, the sound of...a parachute...?
Simon slowly climbed further up into the mountain. This wasn't normal, they were alone on the island, the plane had been pulled out to sea... who had a parachute? The creepers clung to Simon's skin like a puppy to its mother. Their grip felt like a mother restricting their child from doing something. Simon's feet felt like anchors. Why was everything trying to stop him from continuing. Simon ripped at the ground tearing away the vines that trapped him in place. He kicked his feet feeling like he was tearing every single tendon in his leg.
Simon fell to his knees. His leg had given out on him. But he had climbed further, he had gotten closer. Simon reached up stabbing his nails into the dirt, he pulled himself further... he felt the sensation of a faint approaching. He couldn't faint, not now, he had to be strong. Simon pulled himself to his feet. He took a step, then another, and another. He was fine...apart from the bruising and cuts along his shins from the fall. He hadn't eaten in a while, he couldn't wait to go to Jack's feast, to get a nice taste of meat. But right now he had a goal, to find the source of these unnatural noises.
Simon's head spun to the side as he heard the noise once more. He shoved a branch out of the way as he headed in the direction he thought the noise came from, however as it occurred once more it came from a different direction. Simon felt his head reeling from ignoring its signals to pass out. Simon pushed past one last branch, and with that he fell unconscious, his head falling upon rubber. The toe box of a shoe being used as an accidental pillow.
