1998

It's a beautiful sunny day in Park Springs. A little girl with brown hair and blue eyes, just like her mother's, is sitting on the couch reading the new issue of Popular Science magazine. On her table are the Star Trek tapes she'll be watching later.

Next to her is a blond boy a little older than her, watching Britney Spears' first MTV performance on TV. He hopes to have such a cool girlfriend when he grows up. Her mother calls out from inside, breaking his reverie. "Max! Your best friend Samantha is calling."

A few blocks away, a little brown-haired boy has just returned from his first basketball game. His father is taking pictures of him in his room with the championship trophy in hand. The boy doesn't smile, as if he's not happy about winning the trophy. "Come on, show some teeth, Tyler!" says his father. But he just looks at the guitar in the corner of his room and can't wait to learn a new song.

The town's market is quite crowded today. A 10-year-old girl with braided hair helps her father take orders while also doing her homework.

They are all busy with their little lives. They don't know that one of them will be a famous guitarist, another a Nobel Prize-winning physicist. One day they will get married in the town chapel. Another will become the captain of the basketball team, get a scholarship from one of the best universities in the country, marry a girl even prettier than he ever imagined, and turn the small grocery store in town into a chain of stores.

But none of this has happened yet. This is their future, and it is they who will write it. Unaware that their lives will intersect at some point, they are busy with their own tiny worlds.

You might think that all these adventures happened to go back to the point where they started. But without realizing it, they made the best choice for themselves. Instead of changing the past, they wrote their own future.
