Wang Xiaoyue's mother was quite adept at reading people's expressions. She pulled Wang Xiaoyue and said with a smile, "The things in restaurants are not as clean as homemade ones." Then she continued to praise Xiao Xiao's jerky.
When Wang Wei came back again, Wang Xiaoyue's mother said she wanted to treat everyone to a meal, but Xiao Xiao declined.
After Xiao Xiao and Wang Wei left the dormitory, her mother still seemed not to have had enough, "Your classmate is so likable." Speaking in an elegant manner, she smiled, and her two eyes curved like crescent moons, a very charming girl.
Wang Xiaoyue also liked Xiao Xiao. Leaving aside other factors, just looking at her classmate and husband standing together was pleasing to the eye.
Wang Wei and Xiao Xiao were looking for a place to rent, preferably near the school.
Not far from the school, they saw many people setting up stalls on the street, selling things that students could use. Xiao Xiao smiled and said, "When it comes to making money, these people really think quickly and have great courage."
As they walked past these small vendors, they suddenly saw a sign on a wooden board that said "House for Rent."
Xiao Xiao's eyes lit up. She pulled Wang Wei and pointed at the sign.
It was just trying their luck, but they really found something. Wang Wei approached and chatted with the stall owner.
The stall owner was a middle-aged man in his thirties. When he heard that they wanted to rent a house, his face immediately lit up with a smile, "Are you students from Peking? My house is an independent small courtyard, I guarantee you will be satisfied after seeing it." In fact, he was just trying his luck too. The house was a four-sided courtyard left by his ancestors, which had been confiscated before and was only recently returned.
His family had put in a lot of effort to drive away the previous occupants of the courtyard. Although the house had been damaged and divided by several walls, they knocked down two walls to make the rooms suitable for them. There was still one wall left, creating an independent small courtyard. Despite being a bit cramped, it was complete with all the essentials. It was perfect for them if the population wasn't too large.
This stall owner was quick-witted, clearly sensing a change in the wind. He had been tentatively setting up his stall and didn't aggressively approach people as usual. Coupled with financial constraints, he decided to rent out the independent small courtyard, preferably to university students. At least, university students were more reasonable, and he hoped they wouldn't end up occupying his property without reason. He had been frightened by those who had taken over their house for free, and later on, couldn't get them to leave.
Wang Wei nodded, "We are a couple and are looking for a house closer to the school, preferably more private."
"Sure, sure, my house is very close to Peking University. Just go through this alley, and you'll be there. If you're in a hurry sometimes, you can take a shortcut."
The stall owner enthusiastically took Xiao Xiao and Wang Wei to see the house.
The stall owner was right; it was indeed very close to Jingda University, just across an alley. He led them to the courtyard, saying, "Look, although this courtyard is a bit small, it's more than enough for two people."
Xiao Xiao looked around. The courtyard was indeed not large, separated by a wall from the neighboring one. This side of the small courtyard formed a rectangular shape. She went inside and checked; there were few rooms—just one kitchen, one bedroom, and one living room. Behind the kitchen was a backyard connected to a piece of open land with some unharvested vegetable roots. It seemed that the previous occupants had planted vegetables here.
