I'm not particularly excited to work at an asylum, but I need the money, my mom has connections here, and the building is close to my college, so it just... came to be.
The past few weeks I've been here were spent mostly in the supply area, where I helped organize an entire room of supplies. It's easier said than done, trust me.
Now, I'm learning the ropes of patient care and shadowing the nurses. It's a lot of fun, sometimes sad, but mostly, I enjoy it. The patients aren't as crazy as I thought they'd be—just down on their luck, it seems.
Today, I'm taking the vitals of all my patients, ensuring their sugar and blood pressure are normal, and even offering massages and lotion to the ones with aching bodies—anything to help their mental state.
This asylum is much warmer in comparison to a hospital. The wooden floors contrast the cream-colored walls and shine with the darn-brown ascents painted along them. It feels welcoming and warm for the patients.
Now, it's been a good two months that I've been working here. The staff and I are on good terms despite the age gap most of us hold, the patients and I have grown familiar with each other( some of them I'd even consider to be friends) and the work handed to me is becoming harder, but more enjoyable as I gain experience.
Despite some of the long and hard days and sleepless nights, I really do enjoy my time here.
"Shou~" I hear the girl in my arms cry softly, "I'm sleepy~" She murmurs again through her tears.
"It's alright," I whisper in reply, "You can sleep. It's okay. I'll bring you back to your room safely."
Luna, six years old, personality disorder that developed thanks to her abusive parents, prone to crying, scared to sleep, and scared to go outside on her own.
She was found locked in a cage in the backyard of her house for an entire day with no food or water. The only reason she was found was that a neighbor complained about the smell of burning trash, which happened to be her skin burning against the metal of the small cage in the sweltering heat.
That was over a year ago. Now, she's grown so much and her scars have mostly healed. She'll never have to face her parents again, but she still has a long way to go to forget about them.
She's sound asleep in my arms when I enter what we call the living area. This is where all the furniture resides, where patients can come and wind down. The lobby is connected to this room, along with the three separate hallways leading to the wards.
I head straight to Luna's ward to lay her down for the night. It's past her bedtime.
When I'm finished, my coworker calls me over.
"Do you have a minute?"
"Of course. What's up?"
...
...
Oh, dear lord.
