"The body of 34-year old Davis Henderson was found floating the rowing spot in Lake Louise. His body was found tied up, signaling that he was actually drowned by somebody. This is the fourth body that showed up in that specific area, tied the same way. Now, I bet you there is a connection between all four bodies. Surely there's some murderer going around and they must be in that area. Tourists residing in Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise are hesitant on staying there any longer. What is the police doing right now? Absolutely nothing. If they don't take action, I will start investigating myself."
"Cut!" I knew I was in trouble. I peeled my eyes from the camera and turned towards my boss. Her arms were crossed and I knew what was going to happen next. How would I not know, it happens every time. I go off script and boss' face turns red. But she always lets it slide after her speech that I know word-for-word now. I sigh and head towards her office. This has become a part of my muscle memory.
At exactly 3:25, I get told to shut up and head towards boss' office. I check my watch, 3:26. Close enough. My boss, Elaine, enters a split second after I do. She made her way behind her desk and motioned for me to take a seat. "Leone."
I lean back in my chair, "Yes?"
"You should be glad the audience and crew love your looks." I've never really understood this part, yet I nod each time. This was time was no exception. I think my looks are pretty average, I mean, I've seen better. Brown eyes and a darker shade of brown hair.
"You do realize..." This is the part I always zone out at. I've got it memorized already: You do realize that if the murderer, if there is one, finds out that you want to...
I start to think about the murders at Lake Louise. It's one of the best scenery spots and tourist attractions in Canada, who'd murder four people there? I place my chin on my palm and let it rest there while I go deep into thought. I nod occasionally to let Elaine believe that I'm still listening.
The police already went to check out the crime scene, but all they do is look around for a bit and then head back. Apparently after the previous murder, the policemen started to enjoy the scenery rather than investigate.
If this fourth body and all the previous bodies were found in the same location and tied up the same way, it's definitely the same person killing them. I've got to find the link between these four individuals, there's got to be one. I make a mental note in my mind to look up the four of them.
I check my watch once again and realize that we're nearing the end of the speech. "...be the last time you say that. Do you understand, Leone?" We have reached the end of the speech. I nod and start to get up from my seat. Time to go search what the link is between the four.
"Adlin Leone, take a seat." Oh, this was new. She'd usually stop at the 'Do you understand, Leone?' part. Also, using my full name now? She must be getting serious. I sit back down and lean back, crossing my legs.
"You can't investigate these murders." She says.
"Why can't I?" Doesn't matter what explanation she gives, I'm still going to since the police doesn't do shit.
"You're not even a police officer or detective, you should have no business with these cases." I nod understandingly. Understandingly my ass.
"You're right. Perhaps I should quit this job and join the police force," I start to contemplate the idea. She rolls her eyes, "Leone, we need you here. No news reporter can replace you. Because of you, we have teenagers watching the news as well. Majority of them being girls."
I bite the inside of my cheek. Is it just the way I look? If I looked any different, would I have been a horrible reporter? Not at all, I'm a great reporter. My average looks are just the cherry on top.
