"Someday, I will find Kanao again. I'll get as far as possible away from my stepfamily and finally live my own life."

Kanao stood by her bedroom window, watching the last rays of sunlight filter through the swaying branches of the trees. The packed boxes in her arms were a constant reminder that her life was about to change.
"Kanao-chan, are you ready yet?" her mother's voice called from downstairs.
Taking one last look around the room, Kanao let out a sigh. It felt unreal to her, leaving behind the only place she had ever known as home. She made her way downstairs, the pale floorboards creaking beneath her feet.
As she took one last look around her soon-to-be-sold home, she made it out of the door frame and walked over to their borrowed cargo van.
Her mom gave Kanao a sympathetic smile and ruffled her hair.
Even though she was only 10 years old, she was considered mature and understanding by most adults.
But the only thing was..
"Kanao-san!!" As Kanao turned around abruptly, she saw her best friend, Shuto Yamada sprint towards her.
With tousled dark hair that defied gravity, Shuto looked like he just wrestled with a literal tornado. Dressed in faded jeans and a striped t-shirt, his amber eyes widened in surprise as they darted towards the cargo van.
"Eh?" He said. "W-where are are you going? Now? I thought you said it's gonna be another few months-"
Kanao shook her head miserably, blinking back unshed tears. "No," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "It's time to go. We have to leave early."
"But WHY?" Shuto's voice cracked as he asked.
"Kanao-chan?" This time, her father called her from inside the van.
"Hai! Coming!" She turned and shouted.
"Listen, I really have to go. There is one slot left for my okaasan's new job, and we're gonna miss it if we don't head over right now. I'm sorry... BUT WAIT!"
Quickly, she fished something out of her pocket and stuffed it hastily into Shuto's hand.
"Kind of old, but it works pretty well. I have another one that looks the same somewhere in one of my boxes. Find the app Skype on it and I'll text you. My username is Kana0_6." Quickly, she wrapped him in a hug, turned and sprinted towards her van.
Before shutting the door, Kanao gave Shuto one last wave.
The engine started with a rumble.
As the van pulled away, it became nothing more than a small dot on the horizon, eventually disappearing completely.
With a heavy heart, he trudged towards his house.
That's when he realized that he will have to endure his abusive stepfamily's lectures all by himself. With no comfort. No comfort from Kanao anymore.
That's when he realized that he will have to endure his classmates' constant taunting and mocking all by himself. With no support. No support from Kanao anymore.
Shuto squeezed the tiny tablet and made a silent vow in his mind:
"Someday, I will find Kanao again. I'll get as far as possible away from my stepfamily and finally live my own life."
