This has not been an easy adjustment. I feel like I can't trust anyone. After being in a contract with Husk for years I feel betrayed. Not only does my soul now belong to the Radio Demon, but Husk's soul also belongs to him, meaning I see him more often than I want to at this point.
"How many times do I have to apologize before you'll forgive me?" Husk asks me. I still don't want to look at him. My head is resting in my hand as I twirl the straw in my drink, sitting at the cocktail table in the casino lobby.
"Hell will have to freeze over." I respond coldly, taking a sip, still not looking at Husk.
"Oh, come on! I saved your life!" Husk yells at me. I can see his tail swaying in irritation from the corner of my eye. "If it wasn't for me defending you, you'd be fucking gone." He reminds me.
I pound my fist on the cocktail table, finally looking over at Husk. "And wasn't that my decision to make?!" I argue with him. "I'm in a fate worse than double death now. Do you want me to thank you?! Well, fucking thaaaank yooou Husk!" It's obvious my drawn out thank you is sarcastic.
Husk growls, pointing a finger at my chest. "Look, you may be frustrated now, and I understand. But survive. Survive another day for the chance that your circumstances will change. Survive for the opportunity to turn your situation around. Grow stronger." His speech reminds me of something a supportive father would say to his depressed daughter. Maybe he's right. Maybe I've been too negative.
I sigh, trying to lower my anger with Husk. Before I can say any response to him though, I hear HIS voice.
"Oh, darling." That staticky voice calls from a small distance. His voice makes my ear twitch with irritation. I know I must look at him. I've learned over the past few days that if I don't, he'll literally drag me around until I do what he asks. Slowly training me to be his obedient pet.
And it works, I turn my head to look in Alastor's direction. That same smug smile, calm composure, and confident stance as he waits for me to give him my full attention. I let out the breath I don't realize I'm holding and walk towards Alastor. Once I'm in front of him I have to look up in order to keep eye contact. I keep forgetting how tall he is compared to me.
"What?" I ask Alastor. I can still hear the anger in my voice. I know I should hide it better, it's just so difficult sometimes.
Alastor's eyes narrow in frustration as he tilts his head. Hands still behind his back and standing tall. Fuck, I wish I wasn't so scared of him lately.
"'What can I help you with' would be a better statement. You can also drop the attitude and be more grateful." Alastor reminds me. I move my eyes away from him but don't say anything. This seems to upset him. "Try again." He demands. Is he serious?
I bite my tongue to suppress the growl I feel growing in my throat, fisting my hands and trying my best to just get through this moment. I look back up at him again. "What can I help you with, Alastor?" I ask calmly. Though my question sounds much more sincere, we both know that's not true.
"Much better." Alastor seems pleased as he starts walking, motioning with his finger for me to follow him. I quickly take the hint and start walking with him. "It's about time we utilize your abilities, wouldn't you think so?" I know he's asking, but it's not like I really have a choice.
My first thought is to ask what exactly he means, but I know that will just set him off again. Ugh, what response would he want from me right now?
"I'd be honored if my abilities could help the Radio Demon." I do my best to get the statement out of my mouth and to make it sound sincere. I feel like I'm going to vomit.
Alastor keeps walking but looks down at me, a small chuckle escapes his throat. "I'm sure you would be." I can't tell if he's being sarcastic or narcissistic. Either way it makes my blood boil. "I have a job for you. It's a long-term project, but I'm sure it's something you can handle." We keep walking until we reach a set of doors that leads to one of the private conference rooms in the casino. He opens the door and holds it for me. If I didn't know him better, I'd compliment that it's a very gentlemen like move.
Once we're in the room and the door is shut, he continues talking, not taking a seat in any of the chairs. "I need you to infiltrate the V's tower. Get in good with Velvette, Valentino, and Vox." He begins. "I'll be gone for some time, and while I'm away I need someone to keep an eye on them. I need someone to be 'in the know' for the day I return." Alastor seems excited about the idea. "Think that's something you can handle?" Now he's actually asking.
"Well, I don't normally try any tactics with overlords. I try to stay low." I begin, holding my chin as I think it through. "I think I could get in Velvette's good grace easily. I worry about Valentino. His line of work..." I trail off. I don't really want to discuss my concerns with Alastor of all people.
"Ah, yes." Surprisingly, Alastor seems to have caught on to my worries. He puts his staff on the ground in front of him, one hand over the other. "You've been in Hell for some time dear. Surely with your... set of skills, you've... extended your services from time to time. Valentino would find interest in you, I'm certain." Wait... did Alastor just accuse me of being a floozie?!
This seriously isn't a conversation I want to be having with Alastor. Just kill me! "A-actually..." I stutter, making small circles with my fingers to make myself more comfortable.
Alastor's eyes widened for a second, I know I saw it. Luckily, he didn't make me explain any further. He caught on pretty quickly. "Interesting." His voice was so low when he said that one word. It's like he was actually interested in learning this information. Before I could think too much about it, he was moving onto the next steps. "Focus on being part of the filming crew then. Hopefully you can hold a boom microphone for long periods of time." Alastor shrugs.
"That just leaves Vox." I change the subject quickly.
"His organizational skills are lacking. He could use a good secretary." Alastor recommends. How does he know so much already? Is this just something with the overlords I don't understand? "But be careful then. He can be... handsy... with his staff." I almost thought about thanking Alastor for the heads up as he walks past me and opens the door to leave, but why would I thank him for putting me in this situation in the first place?
"I expect a full report when I return." Alastor states clearly as he leaves.
