THE WAR OF THE FIVE KINGS, also known simply as the War of Five Kings, erupted across the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros following the death of King Robert I. It was essentially a three-sided struggle for the Iron Throne, intertwined with two bids for independence. The titular kings included Joffrey Baratheon, the heir to Robert; his uncles Stannis and Renly Baratheon; Robb Stark, styled as the "King in the North"; and Balon Greyjoy, claiming kingship over the Iron Islands.
