Trigger warnings: Swearing
꧁•⊹٭٭⊹•꧂
MACKENZIE
Over the last few months, Henry, Charlotte, Jasper, and I have gotten super close. What started as simple hangouts here and there turned into a daily routine. It's strange, really, how quickly we went from being acquaintances to basically best friends. We did everything together. Whether it was homework, watching movies, or just hanging out, it felt like we were a solid crew.
Of course, it wasn't always easy. Henry and Charlotte had jobs, and they were always disappearing to go work at some mysterious place. Jasper didn't have a job, so he was around a lot more, but there was something off about him, something that made me wonder if he was hiding something.
But none of that really mattered. What mattered was that I finally felt like I was a part of something. Swellview was starting to feel like home.
Today, I decided I'd surprise Henry and Charlotte at their workplace. I figured it'd be a good way to break up the monotony of the day. Maybe they'd be surprised to see me.
I pulled my hoodie tighter around my shoulders as I walked down the street towards Junk n' Stuff, a quirky little store that didn't seem like a place anyone would actually work, let alone spend time at. The sign outside was faded, and the place looked like it hadn't been cleaned in years. Still, it was close enough for me to walk to, and I figured I might as well make the best of it.
As I walked inside, the door creaked loudly, and I scrunched my nose at the smell. It was a mix of old newspapers, stale coffee, and something... else. I couldn't quite place it. My eyes landed on Charlotte, who was sitting behind the cash register, engrossed in a strip of paper. She didn't notice me at first, so I cleared my throat loudly to get her attention.
"Hey, Char!" I greeted, my voice cutting through the silence.
Charlotte's head shot up in surprise, and her eyes widened as she quickly shoved the paper away. She looked flustered, but then a grin spread across her face. "Heyyyyyyyyyy, Kenzie!" She stretched out my name in that way she always did when she was excited. "What are you doing here?"
"I just came to see you guys at work, where's Henry?" I asked, leaning against the counter.
Charlotte hesitated for a moment, clearly trying to figure out how to answer. "Uhhhhhh..." Before she could finish her thought, the door opened and Henry walked in, a little out of breath, like he'd been rushing. He caught sight of me immediately, his face lighting up with a nervous smile.
"Hey, Kenzie! What are you possibly doing here on this fine day?" he greeted, trying to sound casual. But I noticed the way his voice was tight, almost like he was... anxious.
