August 2023

Travis's POV:

It's another hot August evening in Kansas City as I sit out on my back deck setting up my computer for our monthly family FaceTime. Since COVID in 2020, it has become a family tradition that once a month we all get on a call and catch up with each other. During the season that becomes a lot harder and sometimes Jason or I don't make the call, so we really try to prioritize them in the offseason. Usually on these calls I don't have too much to say and let Jason and Kylie take most of the time updating about the girls, but this week I have a feeling I will need most of the time.

Today is the day I tell my family I am dating Taylor. Taylor Swift.

Now, they all know I had a huge crush on her and obviously they know Jason and I spoke about her on the podcast. I had told them that she reached out through text the next day, but I let it go from there and haven't told them anything else. Jason has asked about it when we record the podcast, but I have blown him off and redirected the conversation every time. I was trying to see where we stood before I let anyone else in, and as of last night we are officially dating so we figured we should loop in the families. I glance inside the house and see Tay in the kitchen cooking us dinner, dancing along to some music, causing me to smile. I glance down and see that Jason has started the call so I quickly fix my set up and join as well.

"Hey man." Jason says once the call connects. Him and Kylie are sitting in the basement where he records New Heights both of them wearing Eagles shirts.

"Hi guys, did you plan on matching or?" I joke and see Kylie glare at Jason.

"I told you someone would say something!" She exclaims smacking his shoulder causing us both to laugh. Our parents join next, Mom in her house in Florida and Dad in his house in Philly. Sometimes Dad will go over to Jason's and join the call from there.

"Hey everyone!"

"Hi kids"

The beginning of the call is always a little awkward no one knowing who should start. Usually Mom just picks on someone to start talking, just like back in school.

"Uh- if you guys don't mind I actually have some pretty news to share, so I can start." I stutter out and see everyone's eyes widen. Normally, I never volunteer and usually only have a few things to say if anything at all. I can tell my family is nervous and a little anxious about what I am going to say.

"The floor is yours Trav." Mom says.

"Thanks. Uh- so I am not really sure how to say this, but yeah, I have some big news. It's going to effect all of you so I figured you should hear it from me..." I mumble out already feeling the blush rise to my cheeks. I don't know why it's so embarrassing to admit you are dating someone, but as I get older the more awkward it becomes.

"Did you ask for a trade?" Dad asks

"Are you moving?" Mom asks

"Did you get someone pregnant?!" Jason questions loudly.

At Jason's question the call goes silent and I pause for a moment collecting my thoughts before I divulge my news about Taylor.

"Holy Shit Travis! Did you actually get a girl pregnant!" Kylie exclaims

"Have you ever heard of a condom!?" Mom blurts out

"The media is going to have a field day with this one." Dad mumbles to himself.

"No glove, no love! Thats sex-ed 101!" Jason shouts.

"Oh my god! Guys stop!" I yell out waving my hands in front of the screen trying to gain their attention. I throw my head back in frustration and run my hands over my still red face. The call goes silent with four expectant pairs of eyes looking at me.
