ROOOOAAAARRR!
Scott's head snaps to attention and he puts his nose in the air. "That's Liam's roar. I know it is!"
"Where is he? Can you catch a scent?" I ask anxiously.
"No and the full moon is only minutes away. We need to find him, he doesn't know how to keep control yet. We need to find him."
"We'll find him, Scott."
"We need to find him." Scott repeats.
"Scott." I put a hand on his shoulder. "I promise, we'll find him."
Scott nods, his eyes wide with terror.
And then another roar breaks through the silence and Scott puts his ear in the air.
His eyes light up. "I got it!"
Scott takes off at a sprint and I'm right on his tail, following as he crashes through the woods.
"Where is he?" I ask, feeling the need to know where we're headed.
"In the well at the Hale house." Scott calls back.
I stiffen at his answer, but keep running.
We need to save this boy.
Even if it means seeing my house.
Burned down.
Charcoaled.
Wrecked from the fire.
But using all the willpower I can muster, I shake away the thought and run after Scott.
As we get closer, we hear yells of pain and calls for help.
"Scott!"
"Help!"
"Someone!"
Sniffs.
Cries.
Yells.
"SCOTT! HELP ME PLEASE!"
Following the shouts, Scott's face getting graver and darker with each one, we arrive at a water well, surrounded and covered in dirt, grass, and moss. It's almost completely hidden, but we can hear the cries for help coming from the bottom of it.
Luckily, my old house is no where in sight.
"Liam! Liam!"
Liam's voice cracks as he answers back in a hushed whisper. "Scott?"
"Yes, it's me! Are you okay?"
Liam answers as honestly as possible. "I sure hope so. Please," he sobs, "just get me out of here. I'm gonna die. I'm gonna die."
"You're not gonna die," Scott says forcefully, yanking at the grass holding down the cover of the well.
I run to the other side and help him, grabbing and pulling handfuls of nature.
Everything is cleared in no time at all and Scott plunges his hands into the well.
"I'M FALLING! SCOTT!" Liam cries.
But I can sense that Scott won't let that happen.
His hands obviously connect with something and his muscles strengthen.
His eyes lock on the well below him.
His face sharpens.
He pulls with all his strength, with me helping him pull the boy out of the hole.
Liam grunts, this is obviously killing his energy.
Scott does too, all of his effort focused on saving this boy.
This boy he's obviously close to.
A brother maybe?
We get him out of the well and he stares up at Scott with the biggest, brightest blue eyes I've ever seen. His brown hair is covered in grime and sticks up in every direction.
His chest heaves.
His shoulders slump.
His entire body trembles furiously.
"You're okay, Liam," Scott whispers. "You're okay."
And when Liam looks at Scott with the most amazing amount of love and respect and admiration, I immediately know who this boy is.
He's just a kid.
I know it.
He's a random kid that Scott obviously bit while trying to save his life.
And now Liam looks up to him as if he's a god.
As if he's some kind of prodigy.
As if he's his big brother.
And Liam doesn't look away from Scott.
But Scott can't take it anymore.
He grabs Liam's arms and pulls him into his chest, embracing him as tightly as possible.
And Liam hugs back just as tightly.
"You're okay," Scott whispers again, tears trickling down his cheeks.
"You're okay."
