As the Pteranodon above swooped down with a screech, the campers all scattered. Brooklynn and Yaz darted to one side whilst Ben and Darius fell backwards towards one of the hang gliders. Terror reigned in Ben's eyes, and he found himself backing him towards the very edge of the platform, his hand seeking solace right on the corner.
Sammy and Kenji had already darted for the gondola, making a run for it as one of the cabins was nearing the station.
One of the many flying reptiles from above landed right in front of them, letting out a horrific and almost ear bursting scream. It sounded like a howl mixed with the sound of chalk squealing against a chalkboard. Sammy stumbled back into Kenji, who caught her and steadied her for a moment before grabbing a small rock from beside him. His hand raised and he threw the rock right at the Dimorphodons head, hitting it right in the forehead before ricocheting off and landing on the concrete ground. Whilst the Dimorphodon was somewhat discombobulated, Sammy and Kenji made a run for it. Sliding past it's clawed wing and rushing to the cabin. Right as the doors opened.
"Come on, close already!"
Sammy squealed as the pterosaur moved towards the cabin, using its wings as leverage against the ground. Right as the doors shut, the Dimorphodon reached in, catching its wing in the door before the cabin turned and nearly ripped it off. The reptile let out a raspy coo before stumbling off the edge and gliding down to the top of the trees below.
Meanwhile, several pterosaurs were closing in on the other four. Pushing them to the edge of the platform. Luckily, Yaz and Brooklynn were able to find a slight gap in the dinosaurs. Sliding through them. Brooklynns arm had been caught ever so slightly by the teeth of one, leaving a grazed bite mark on her upper arm. Yaz pulled Brooklynn to the gondola, yanking her into one of the cabins as a Quetzalcoatlus chased after them. It's large, pointed beak snapping at the two teenagers. A desire to bring misery to the two girls for invading its home blazing in its eyes. As the doors to the gondola shut, the reptile shoved its beak into the doors, causing the two girls to scream and stumble into the back of the gondola.
"Do something!"
Brooklynn yelled to Yaz, as if the older girl could do something about the situation.
"What exactly do you want me to do? Kick it?"
Yasmina retaliated, annoyance clear in her tone as the beast continued to snap its beak at them. When the cabin began to move again, they both believed that the pterosaur would pull back just like the Dimorphodon had done with Kenji and Sammy earlier, but instead, it began to flap its giant wings. The cabin rocked back and forth with each unrelenting movement. While the doors continued to try and close on the beak, the pterosaur flew alone with the cabin, its legs planted on the very bottom as it steady itself with its wings.
Suddenly, an idea popped into Yasmina's head and she rushed to the door after managing to fix her footing, pushing at the metal sides of the door, The part that usually locked with the other to keep the doors shut.
"Help me close it!"
Yaz ordered the pink haired girl, who quickly stumbled to her feet and rushed to the other side of the door, pushing it forward with all her might.
The Quetzalcoatlus, still greedily snapping its beak, began to screech. The movements to keep up with the cabin suddenly became desperate movements to get away.
As the two girls pushed on the metal slides of the doors, it began to close in on the pterosaur's beak... A loud cracking noise echoing through the cabin.
When the reptile let out a terrifying, pain-filled screech, the two girls pulled back with a scream. Their eyes widening as the beast pulled what remained of its beak out of the doors and clumsily flew back to the platform. With shaky breaths, the two girls looked down to the floor of the cabin. About a quarter of the poor things beak lay on the floor. Shards of it scattered all throughout the cabin. The metal prongs of the doors had managed to snap it off.
"Oh my god."
Brooklynn mumbled quietly, staring down at it. Her hands coming off of the door as she settled backwards onto one of the seats. A quiet laugh of relief bubbling in her throat. Yaz eventually threw herself down onto the seat next to Brooklynn, joining in with the huffed laughter. Trying to catch her breath. The two slowly coming down from the adrenaline of the situation.
Meanwhile, Ben and Darius were still being closed in by a plethora of pterosaurs. Their beaks snapping at them as they took slow, menacing steps forward.
"Darius, Darius what do we do?"
Ben asked warily, his entire body trembling as he reached out to brush his hand over Darius'. Worry and fear flashing in his eyes. The memories of being dragged off by Pterosaurs and tossed around like a play toy sinking into his mind. The pain of his flesh being torn by sharp, ragged teeth digging into his skin. A shallow feeling pooling in his stomach. Both fear and acceptance that he may not make it out of there alive. Not this time.
Darius looked around, trying to find an escape. A way to get out of the situation. A way to get Ben out of his head full of fear and back into the moment. Then, his hand brushed over one of the bars of the hang gliders and an idea popped into his head.
"We're going to have to hang glide down."
He stated simply, turning to face the boy next to him. Ben was shaking his head in disagreement. There was no way he was going to hang glide all the way down to the ground. Ever since the monorail incident, he'd had an extreme fear of heights. Barely being able to look outside of the gondola as they made their way up.
"No, no way. Absolutely not."
The way Bens head shook rapidly showed Darius the amount of fear that the other boy was feeling. Ben could feel his heartbeat throughout his entire body. The beating sounding loudly in his ears as he looked behind him to see the large drop.
"We have to, Ben. It's the only way out."
With a swift movement, Darius grabbed Bens hand and pulled him over to the hang glider. Helping him wrap his trembling fingers around the bar. The shaking of the older boys body only made Darius feel even worse about the situation. He knew Ben had a terrible fear of Pterosaurs after the incident. Darius was also worried that he wouldn't be able to keep Darius on the hang glider. That he'd drop him again.
But when a Dimorphodon launched forward and nearly snapped its teeth on Darius' ankle, he knew they had to go. Now or never.
Grabbing the hang glider tightly, the two boys threw themselves off the edge of the platform. For a minute, they didn't think they were going to make it. The four down below watched as the hang glider dipped down before catching on the wind and pushing upward into a steady glide. Sammy cheered happily while the others on sighed in relief. Thankful that Ben and Darius would be okay. Hopefully.
"See, Ben? I knew we would be okay!"
Darius nudged the other boy with his shoulder as they tried to manipulate the hang glider to turn with their bodies, steering it towards a clearing nearby. When they thought that things were going smoothly, a loud snarl was heard behind them.
The pterosaurs had followed them off the edge and were now trying to get to them in the sky. A truly terrified scream escaped Bens lips and he nearly let go of the bar. If it wasn't for Darius' shoulder on his, he probably would have.
"Turn left!"
"How?!"
Ben retaliated, trying to pull the bar left and shift his weight but struggling with it. When Darius did the same, the hang glider eventually followed their will and pulled to the left, away from the Darwinopterus that was trying to snap at their sides.
When the sight of a cloud came into view, an idea popped into Darius' head. They could use that to get away from the flying reptiles!
Nudging Ben to get the boys attention, he gestured to the cloud.
"We can use the cloud to get away from them!"
The younger boy stated, pulling the bar to the right with his body. Ben quickly nodded before doing the same, causing the hang glider to drift into the cloud, losing the pterosaurs in the process. The two cheered happily when they realized that it had worked. All until they popped out of the cloud and a Dimorphodon launched itself onto the fabric of the glider and digging its claws into it. Causing it to rip.
Eventually, the Dimorphodon unlatched itself and the hang glider tumbled down into the trees. The two boys screaming as it fell into the branches. Their hands fell off of the bars as they hit each branch on the way down. But thankfully, a bundle of leaves lay at the very bottom to catch them once they finally fell off the branches.
Sammy, Yaz, Brooklynn and Kenji had already began running to the location where the hang glider had dropped to. Occasionally having to hide under trees to go undetected by the pterosaurs above.
"Ben?! Darius?! Are you two okay?!"
The eldest girl yelled out, running as fast as she could to get to the two boys. the other three trailing not too far behind her. When they finally got to the scene, they helped Ben and Darius out of the bush. Darius stumbled a little, wincing as he put a little too much pressure on his hip. He'd landed squarely on one of the branches with his hip, so it was likely that it'd be bruised.
"Yeah, we're fine. Thanks."
Darius mumbled, looking over to Ben who seemed pretty shaken up. He had a certain fear in his eyes. A sort of... dull shade. With a worried gaze, Darius put his hand on Bens shoulder in an attempt to comfort him in a silent way without alerting the others. He knew that Ben didn't like to be put on the spot.
The hang glider was dangling from one of the branches, a large rip ran through the fabric. Kenji groaned and rolled his eyes.
"Damnit! It's ripped!"
He sighed with defeat, running his hand through his hair as if two of his friends hadn't just fell from the sky after being attacked by pterosaurs.
Sammy, ever optimistic, still had a smile on her face. Her hands planted firmly on her hips as she stared up at the hang glider. Determination evident in her expression.
"It's fine, I can fix it!"
She said cheerily, the thing she'd seen through the binoculars completely slipping from her mind.
"It should be fine for the raft. We just need to figure out a way to get it out of the trees."
The youngest shrugged, looking around at the others. His hand still firmly planted on Bens shoulder. Ideas of how to get the hang glider out of the tree without tearing the fabric any more running through his mind. All until Kenji and Sammy both simultaneously gasped, turning each other with excited grins on their faces.
"Boat!"
They exclaimed in unison, letting the other four stand there in confusion. Staring at them as if they were both going crazy. It took a moment for them to finally come down from their squealing excitement to actually explain what they were so excited about.
"With the binoculars up on the platform—"
Kenji began, his words catching in his throat as Sammy finished off the sentence for him.
"We saw a boat!"
She exclaimed. The last part, Kenji and Sammy both said together in unison. Their cheerful voices merging together to create a loud clatter of excitement.
"Tiff and Mitches boat was off on some rocks! We can totally get to it!"
When they finally spilled those words out, the entire group grew excited. Using an actual boat would be far easier than building another raft. It'd also be a lot more likely to work and get them to land safely, as a raft wasn't the most reliable mode of transport from one island, across an ocean, to another.
"Maybe there's a phone on the boat!"
Brooklynn chimed in enthusiastically, smiling widely. The others only laughed at her comment before rushing off into the forest. Darius and Ben straying at the back because Darius found it a little difficult to run and Ben didn't want to leave him alone at the back of the group.
