Unrestful slumber

The night bore on for what seemed to be an eternity. A blanket of darkness surrounding the area with not a light to expose what may be hiding in the shadows. Normally the moon was responsible of casting a glow down on Isla Nublar, but it seemed the clouds had a different plan in mind. Covering it almost completely to the point where only the illuminated silhouette could be seen through the haze of the clouds.
Though not a camper seemed to mind as they huddled up in their bunks, the cold chill bestowing goosebumps on their skin. Thin blankets did little to keep them warm, but even so, each of them held them over themselves so tightly. After all, it was certainly better than laying out in the open, on the dirt that trembled with each step of a nearby dinosaur. Whether a Compsognathus or a Tyrannosaurus Rex, it shook all the same. Disturbing whomever stood still for too long.
Over the past few weeks it had been relatively peaceful. As peaceful as it could be when living life on an island with dinosaurs running rampant. Having to run for your life after barely thirty minute intervals. The safety of their camp was their only refuge, but even then it was still at risk sometimes. The occasional swarm of Compsognathus', or as the six called them, Compy's. Sometimes, though rarely, even a larger dinosaur would pass by. But they'd never stay for long. Only passing through to get to the watering hole that was just through the bush.

But the chill had gotten to one camper in particular. The youngest, and most fragile of all. Yet the one whom the other five relied on the most. The one they deemed the 'leader', who they looked to for all their answers without bothering to think of how the young thirteen year old may have felt. He was twelve when he first embarked on the yacht to Jurassic World after beating the video game and being rewarded a trip to the new summer camp program, Camp Cretaceous. But his birthday had been a few days earlier. He'd only known thanks to the counter they kept on a rock. Marking each day with a tally mark to ensure they never lost track of time. To keep them sane despite how each day passed with little hope of being rescued or finding a way off the dreadful island. Little hope of finally returning to the safety of their home. Of their parents welcoming arms.

As he lay in his bunk, he tossed and turned. His head whirling with unpleasant images. An image he'd never wanted to see again. One he'd never thought he'd see again. The last time he'd had nightmares of the death of one of his best friends was after he'd lost his grip on Ben. The sight of him falling into the trees beneath them and being dragged off by the pterosaurs engraved in his brain. Sure, he'd had a few of those nightmares even after Ben had returned to their safe group, and he knew that he'd have them for years to come. Maybe they'd never go away. But his nightmares were never like this.

He could feel the physical ache in his heart. The cold touch of Bens lifeless body against his own, trembling one. It seeped into his skin like water does to a carpet. As if he was soaking it up. It felt too real. Far more real than the other nightmares he'd had. Not to mention the blood. He could taste it in his mouth. The metallic tinge on his tongue as blood stained his face. Not his own blood. Bens blood. The blood that the older boy had accidentally smeared on the younger ones face when he was reaching out for him. It was almost like watching the raindrops slide down the car window whilst on a long road trip the way Bens blood trickled from the wound in his side. Staining the dirt below him with the liquid that once pulsed around his body. The blood that occasionally made his cheeks light up a shade of pink whilst the tips of his ears tinged red. The blood that Darius had once dabbed off onto a cloth whilst laughing with Ben after the brunette had tripped over a rock and cut open his knee. The blood that shouldn't have run so fast out of a wound so large. This was never meant to happen to Ben.
This was never meant to happen to the campers.
They were meant to have a delightful time at Camp Cretaceous. The most exciting summer camp the world has ever seen. With behind exclusive scenes tours, kayaking, rock climbing, obstacle courses, and of course, dinosaurs.
Dinosaurs that were meant to be behind secure fences and kept in containment so as to not hurt anyone. But were now freely roaming the island like wild animals roam a forest. Free.
