Later that day, when the sun had reached mid point in the sky, the six of them were all sitting in the center of their camp, thinking of new ways to get off the island. The last raft they'd made had sunken below a large wave and sent them right back to where they started. They were just lucky they hadn't taken all of their supplies with them, otherwise they wouldn't have any food or other resources.
"What if we go back into the tunnels and look for some other way to communicate to people?"
Brooklynn suggested, looking around at the others. Everyone else - save for Sammy - seemed unamused by that suggestion. The last time they went into the tunnels they were nearly killed, so there was extreme hesitation with putting themselves back into that situation.
An unfathomable idea though, was Kenji's 'human catapult.' Denying the laws of physics and absolutely everything else that would make a human catapult completely impossible, Kenji was sure it would work. Completely certain of it, in fact. It had been his only suggestion ever since they began brainstorming ideas.
"We need to build a raft. It's the best way off the island."
Darius reasoned, writing down the suggestions and plans on a chalkboard they'd found and pieced back together. All the others sighed. Their last raft hadn't been a complete and utter failure, but it definitely was the best way to go about escaping the island.
"Our last raft kind of sunk beneath the ocean, bro."
Kenji disagreed, rolling his eyes as he leaned back against the couch. He was still rooting for his human catapult - an idea that Sammy knew was illogical, but she often commented on how fun it sounded.
"It's still the best way off the island. Better than building a human catapult."
At least Yasmina was reasonable. But Kenji still grumbled quietly beneath his breath before turning to Ben, who was leaning over the railing of the makeshift structure and staring down at the ankylosaurus that he learned to treat as a... sibling? Best friend? Everyone was rather unsure.
"Ben? What do you think?"
The oldest boy called out, waiting for the other to turn around and say something. But it seemed like Ben hadn't heard him. With an annoyed sigh, Kenji balled up a spare piece of paper and threw it at the back of the boys head, catching his attention.
"Hey! What was that for?"
Ben sounded irritated. His hand moving to the spot on the back of his head where the piece of paper had hit him. Kenji and Brooklynn both snickered quietly as Darius spoke up.
"What do you think is the best way to get off the island?"
Darius asked, his left hand firmly planted on his hips whilst his right held the piece of chalk in his hand, as if waiting to write something down.
"Uh... I don't know."
The older boy shrugged, still rubbing the back of his head for a moment before dropping his arms. On the other hand, Sammy had a wide smile on her face as she spoke up.
"On a scale of most boring to most fun, the human catapult is definitely at the top!"
She exclaimed. Giving 'extremely helpful' input to the situation. At least it made everyone laugh.
Once the laughter died down, Ben gave a serious response.
"Probably a raft. It's the best way to go, really. Brooklynn has experience with it and it's not like any of us have a pilots license, and personally, I am not getting in a plane."
They had all expected Ben to finish off his sentence with 'if any of you are flying it', but he just finished it off there. Not saying a word more. The silence droned on for only a moment before everyone shrugged. Kenji gave an exasperated sigh and nodded his head.
"Alright, whatever. Raft it is."
There was dramatic defeat laced in his words as he slumped back against the couch, his arms splayed out across the back of it.
Now that they had all agreed that a raft was the best mode of getting off the island, they just had to figure out where to get more fabric for the sail... After all, they couldn't use their blankets. That would be impractical.
They all sat around, pondering on ideas until Kenji opened his mouth with a sigh.
"If only we could go up to lookout point and just hang glide all the way to Costa Rica."
He said airily, using his hands to show a 'gliding' motion. That piqued their interest. For once, Kenji said something useful.
"There are hang gliders?"
Yasmina asked. Furrowing her eyebrows together in thought as she looked to Darius, who jumped into the conversation with enthusiasm.
"You mean, large pieces of fabric that are made to catch the wind?"
Darius added, a smile on his face as he cheered with the others. That would make the sail for their raft. Then they could finally leave the island again, with hopes that it would actually work.
As if a lightbulb had finally gone off in Kenji's head, he sat up straight, a wide grin smeared across his face.
"Hey, we could use that for the sails!"
He piped up, grinning like a mad man as if he was the only one to come up with the idea, when really, he was the last of the six to come to the conclusion. Though the others only laughed and cheered, nodding along to Kenji.
"Now, how do we get to lookout point?"
Ben asked, his hands on his hips as Kenji abruptly stood up and began to talk about how he knew the park like the back of his hand again.
