They met beneath the city's hue,
Two friends, as days together grew,
Each moment shared, a bond did weave,
In her company, he found reprieve.

He saw a glimmer in her eyes,
A hint of joy amidst her sighs,
With every meeting, hope was spun,
That she might trust him, one by one.

Marilyn’s smile, though rare, was bright,
A beacon in her endless night,
He cherished every word she spoke,
Each laugh, a chain of sorrow broke.

One evening, waiting by the lane,
He stood, heart light despite the rain,
When from the office, swift and shy,
A co-worker caught his eye.

She spoke, her voice a trembling plea,
Confessed her love, asked, "Be with me?"
Surprised, he stood, unsure, confused,
Unseen by them, Marilyn perused.

From shadows, Marilyn watched them there,
Her fragile heart ensnared by care,
The scene before her, like a blow,
Awoke old wounds she couldn’t show.

She turned away, her hope now torn,
Old ghosts within her heart reborn,
The light they'd built, now seemed to fade,
As silent tears began their raid.

He saw her face, her fleeting glance,
The pain that bloomed from circumstance,
Quickly, he dismissed the plea,
His heart with Marilyn wished to be.

Racing to where she stood in grief,
He sought to bring her heart relief,
"Marilyn, wait," his voice implored,
But her heart ached, her spirit roared.

She faced him with her darkened eyes,
A storm of hurt, of silent cries,
"I thought...," she started, then withdrew,
Old fears of trust came crashing through.

He took her hand, with gentle might,
"I only want to set things right,
You’re the one my heart holds dear,
Please believe, have faith, no fear."

Marilyn’s walls began to shake,
The fortress built from past heartache,
She saw in him a truth, a light,
A chance to step from endless night.

"I’m scared," she whispered, voice so small,
Afraid to let her barriers fall,
He held her close, with tender care,
"Together, we can face it, I swear."

They stood beneath the city’s glow,
Two hearts that struggled to let go,
And in that moment, hope reclaimed,
A love that patiently remained.
