Chapter 5:
Nia sat on the mattress in her bedroom, freshly showered and staring into space. The room was dark, dimly lit from the moonlight illuminating the floors and surfaces.
Nia couldn't sleep. She had tried to but the flickers of memory kept her from getting any rest. She was too jumpy, hyper-alert of every sound and movements.
The screams and cries for help had stopped and only a few distant sirens and whirring choppers could be heard beyond the walls of the complex community.
What ever was happening here was also happening outside in the city.
With that thought, she jumped out of bed. Once in the living room she knelt down to the stacks of boxes in the corner and searched for a familiar narrow one containing the tv. After following the steps on the instruction manual on how to connect all the cabling and wiring, Nia clicked on the plug and took the remote control in hand.
The tv switched on and Nia clicked on to a news channel. A news anchor lady appeared on the screen, her face etched in a frown as she spoke to a distressed reporter man, situated in a chopper as they flew around the sky, show casing the city scape. Buildings were on fire, traffic roads were blocked by abandoned cars and trucks. People were running in the streets like a horde of tiny ants. There seemed to be more of those crazy people aswell by their animalistic motions and ticks.
Nia turned off the mute button and lowered the volume to listen to their conversation.
"- The main roads are blocked off here in Harbor falls, with no possible way of entry or exit to other outside cities, towns." The reporter man shouted into the microphone, his voice muffled by the whirring sound of the chopper. " According to minister of police Winston Sterling. The police troops are trying to contain the spread for as much as possible until the military force arrive to help handle the situation from drastically increasing. However hours has passed and no word or appearance from them had reported. We lost contact with Minister Sterling and hoping for a reply from him soon. This is Ethan Cladwell, reporting live from Harbor Falls, stay safe everyone."
Then his icon vanished from the screen and they zoomed into the anchor woman who had been listening.
"Thank you so much for the word Ethan, we'll keep in contact for more reports from you and other reporters from around the country for as much as we can."
"For our last minute we advice every citizen to stay inside and lock all doors from any violent sick person you come in contact with to avoid any brutal attacks. The police are doing the best they can to help and will reach you once the situation has been put under control. Thus quarantine yourself from the outside and please remain calm. Remember you are not alone. Help is on the way. This is Yevette Anderson and we're signing out on our 8pm news, stay tuned until next time and stay safe everyone."
They played the outro then seconds later switched to more reports from different residential areas in the country. All suffered the same fate as Harbor Falls, others more drastic or subtle than the rest.
Nia lived in Eastgate. There were no reports about the place, because Eastgate wasn't part of the capital cities in the country and wasn't that known to the public.
The major cities were the ones who appeared more severe, more people equaled more attacks which lead to more chaos. But they were also more equipped.
Military trucks and choppers were already present. Men in camoflauge uniforms and big firearms, were shooting rubber bullets at the crazies but as Nia noticed before, they had no affect on them what's so ever. It was like they were incapable of feeling pain ,that, or they plainly just did not care and that freaked her out.
They shot multiple bullets through the chest tearing through bare skin, the force of the shots made them hit the ground, but they surges back up like they were possed by demons, jaws angrily snapping like predators.
Other's limbs were bent in unnatural angles. Others were completely torn from their body.
A sudden dreadful realisation popped in her head, remembering the decapitated fingers that still layed a bloody mess in her doorway hall.
Bile burned the back of her throat once again.
