you're leaning forward in your seat at yet another barcelona match, sitting close to the opponents goal. its just been announced that joão is being subbed on. you can see him pace the length of the field, a determined gaze hardening his face.
once the game resumes, you keep becoming distracted by joão instead of the gameplay, which is going on in the defending end. you will yourself to stay focused.
suddenly, the ball is in his possession and he sprints towards the opponent's goal. he's approaching at a rapid pace and suddenly you're on your feet, along with the rest of the barça fans in the stands. the cheering grows to a roar and you clasp your hands in anticipation, holding your breath.
it's a one on one with the goalkeeper.
joão strikes the ball, and it sinks into the net. he pumps his fist into the air as you scream wildly, clapping. his teammates clap him on the back and hug him. a giddy smile consumes your face.
joão makes his way towards the corner of the field, close to your seat. your heart leaps in your throat. he points at the crowd with one hand, arm extended. then he makes a heart with his hands, close to his chest.
his eyes find yours in the sea of fans. the others around you can't tell, but he's looking straight at you.
and he winks.
a smirk curves your mouth as you shake your head, remembering that time on the beach. your cheeks flush pink.
you're an idiot, you mouth. everyone around you is too busy celebrating to notice.
joão gives an amused huff and turns away.
