When James picked her up, it seemed like another one of his jokes. The next moment the night flashed white, she and James were thrown to the ground, Lily hit her head and lost consciousness. When she opened her eyes, all she saw was a big yellow blur in front of her and a humming sound in her ears. She plunged back into the darkness, but now she could hear voices:
"Thank Merlin, she's alive!"
"Water! Give me water!"
Someone splashed water in her face. Lily blinked, nearly vomiting from the many sounds and smells that flooded her mind.
"What's wrong with me?" she asked, parting her lips, running her palm over her face and smelling a familiar metallic smell...
Falling down, she automatically grabbed James' sweatshirt. And now her palm was covered with blood. Lily sat up jerkily and the people around her rushed to the side. The faces of her friends, eerily illuminated by the light of the wands, flashed before her, and they were immediately covered by a large ink stain. Lily closed her eyes, shook her head, and started to rise up awkwardly.
"James!" she muttered, as if out of her mind. "Where is he?"
James was lying on the ground, illuminated by the dim light of five or seven wands.
He was surrounded by people on all sides.
He was unconscious and quickly turning pale.
Shaking as if with a fever, Sirius tried to revive him, blasting his friend's unconscious body with every spell in his arsenal, but his efforts only caused the terrible wound on James' chest to open and close like a sea sponge, pouring black blood over his skin.
Something red and shiny stirred inside, as if covered by a film.
Sirius felt for a pulse with a trembling hand and leaned his ear against James' bloodied chest.
Lily's vision swam, her legs gave out and she clung to Lupin's shoulder to keep from falling.
Bloody hell, she knows, she knows this spell, she's heard about it from... from...
A bloody mouse and two pale, spidery hands raised over its body flashed through her mind. James suddenly gasped as he came to, sputtering with blood and convulsing.
"No, damn it, Prongs, no, I won't let you," Sirius shouted, abandoning magical resuscitation and beginning indirect CPR. His hands were covered in blood up to his elbows, blood stained his face and hair, "Did you hear me fucker?! No!"
Marlene put her hand over her mouth.
"Sirius, don't!" Lily screamed, grabbing his arms.
"Evans, get out of here!" Sirius yelled.
"I know this spell, you're not helping him, you're making it worse!" Lily yelled back, "Get your bloody hands off him!"
And she shoved him, so hard that Sirius fell onto his thigh. Lily looked up at him with absolutely crazy eyes. Sirius was stabbed with anger, but somehow he found the strength to control his emotions.
"Turn him over," Lily ordered, rolling up her sleeves.
With shaking hands, Alice splashed the rest of the firewhisky on her hands.
Sirius and Remus worked together to turn James over. Several girls in the crowd sobbed, clutching their hands to their mouths as the ugly cut on James' side opened in all its glory, revealing something pearly white inside.
Lily pressed her lips together tightly, calmly feeling the edges of the wound.
"Light," she commanded briefly, "Remus, hold his hands."
